I think I personally would just go right to Lindsay, the girl posting the job, and tell her who you are and ask about the job.  It's not as though you don't know her at all - if she's an aquaintance, then I don't think you're overstepping your boundries.  Also, if Whitney doesn't really care for you, I wouldn't count on her to help you out by recommeding you or anything - who knows what she wil say to her friend.  I just don't think there's anything wrong w/you contacting Lindsay directly.  HTH and good luck!

I think you should call her up, introduce yourself and say something like "I think I've met you a few times- you're friends with Whitney right?" and ask about the position. If anything, contacting her directly will help you out- it def. won't hurt!

I like option three - and you never know, it's possible she knows Whitney is being unreasonable in the boyfriend situation. Personally, I try to give people my friends don't like a chance. (Actually, I try to give people I don't like a chance, especially if the situation is in any way job-related...) Odds are, she may be OK giving you the cold shoulder in a bar, but wouldn't translate that sort of behavior to the office.

Well it certainly couldn't hurt to try and warm up to Whitney a bit.  You could give her a call before you go directly to Lindsey, and maybe she would be inclined to put in a good word for you.  It may be better than going to Lindsey as though you only know her through Steve, see?  Since Lindsey probably is only friends with Steve because of Whitney anyway.  If you simply acknowledge the friend network sequence here, that you know Lindsey through Whitney through Steve, then you are avoiding any overstepping of bounds, and possibly cutting up some silent tension between you and your good friend's girlfriend, which is always a good thing to be rid of.

Good luck getting the internship!
