So, I've had some red streaks/highlights in my hair for a while now. I've been doing what I can to keep them looking good - shampooing as infrequently as I can, using color-depositing shampoo, staying away from sulfates, chlorine, etc. But they just don't want to last, especially toward the ends of my hair. And getting them re-done so frequently is getting expensive. I know Manic Panic doesn't have the most sophisticated reputation in the world, but has anyone used it or can anyone comment on it? Does it work? Does it last? Would you recommend it? I'm hoping that I can punch up my color on my own in between salon visits, and that is the only brand I know of for unnatural and unnaturally bright hair colors.
This is basically what my color becomes about 5 weeks after a salon visit. See those weird faded brown streaks? That's where my bright red used to be. (Sorry this pic is weird, I wasn't taking it specifically for my hair, I just rifled through my blog outfit pictures to find the best example!)
Or does anyone else have any other suggestions? I looked into nearby beauty schools but their highlights are all the same or only marginally cheaper than the girl I go to now.
P.S. sorry if this is picture-heavy, but this is what my hair looks like about 2-3 weeks after coloring. It's faded in this shot but not terribly so. I should really get a good picture the day after coloring sometime!

I'm curious about this, too, because I was considering Manic Panic for my hair. I'm no help here, obviously, but I hope someone can answer you.
I love your highlights, though! Do you have to bleach your hair to get them that bright? That was always my concern with hair color like that. Bleach scares me.

To be honest I am not entirely sure. I guess I just assume that she is bleaching it, but basically the drill is: she puts foils in my hair, I sit for 30 minutes, she rinses that out, then she says "OK let's tone it" and the toning process is basically her pulling some gunk through my hair and leaving it on for 10 minutes before rinsing it out. I don't know what "toning" is so I don't know if that is the actual color stage, or if red hair requires some extra toning stage after the dye (in which case the first step might be a dye + bleach combo? I don't know. Clearly I have no idea what I am paying this woman to do to my head)
Can anyone who is smarter about hair dying shed any light on that for us?

She bleached your hair and then used toner to make it less brassy (orangey color), and then added the red dye.
If your hair was still kinda orangey, the red wouldn't be as vibrant as it would be on white-ish blonde hair.
(I like to get my hair colored )

Manic Panic fades pretty quick but it'd be an option if you want to DIY it. I used to dye a streak in my hair in high school. I've been blue, green, purple, etc.
Try it on one strand and if you don't like it, it does rinse out.

I did the same thing. It does fade quickly but it's easy to do yourself and you could put it on the darker pieces without having to worry about it dying your whole head. You could almost do it in the shower.
Interesting idea - - using MP to brighten and extend a fun color until your next pro visit. It could work. I'm just concerned about you being able to find the right color or blend so that you don't end up with a really cool/blue red on top of/at the end of the warmer tone that you have.
pollyjean - I definitely thought of that, but I figure I'm prepared to take the risk so I can see if it works, because if it does I think I'll save a significant amount of $$ in the long run.
exsupahero - Have you used those? Do you know why they're better (like do they fade slower or just better all around?)
nunzi182 - When you say that you can put it on the darker pieces, do you mean I can put it on my hair that isn't bleached and it won't turn it red? (obviously I wouldn't go around dunking my whole head in the dye but it would be helpful to know if it was a little idiot-proof like that)
Xtinastyles - I don't have any questions for you but I didn't want to leave you out
