my doctor is treating me for asthma symptoms due to a sinus cold that i had a few weeks ago. i've been having mild pain/tightness in my upper chest when i breathe in deeply and it had grown to be a major discomfort this past weekend so i went in for a visit. at first i was VERY unsure about his diagnosis. (i thought it was probably something much much different) but i did a little research on asthma and it's starting to sound right on target. he hasn't actually diagnosed me with asthma yet, just treating me for it right now but will evaluate it when i go back in a few weeks.
i don't know that much about asthma. my brother has had it most of his life, but his symptoms were very different. he never had any of the pain/discomfort that i am experiencing. if any one does have it, can you tell me a little about how it feels? how did you find out you had it and what types of things make it worse or better for you? anything else i should know?
I have asthma. I was diagnosed with it when I was 13 years old. I found out that I had it b/c I started having attacks (my chest would get so tight and I just couln't breathe). I found it to be painful at times. Asthma can happen at anytime and it ranges from person to person. Mine started at the onset of puberty. My dad had childhood asthma that went away at the onset of puberty. I have a friend who only gets asthma when she has bronchitis. It's really very different for different people.
I rarely have attacks now, but if I get bronchitis or a sinus infection, I find that I use my inhaler(s) with greater frequency. I also have been on Singular in the past when I've been sick. I used to have exercise induced asthma (that's how it started). I couldn't do any kind of sports or exercise without using my inhaler first. Now, I don't really have that problem. I only have issues with my asthma with sinus problems or allergies or something illness related. I don't remember the last time I had to use my inhaler to go swimming or running.
But asthma can definitely cause pain and discomfort (your lungs aren't getting enough air, of course it can be painful!). It sounds like your asthma may go away when your sinus problems get better since that's seems to be what triggered it. But while you're experiencing symptoms, don't ever leave home without your inhaler. You don't want to get stuck somewhere without it and have an attack (that's just not fun).
I have cough-induced asthma. That means that whenever I am sick with a cough, or just coughing in general, the coughing fits create a asthma attack and I cough even harder and longer, pretty much suffering under I give myself a headache. I am never sure the headaches are from lack of oxygen or just coughing too hard.
I have inhalers and i used to take an allergy pill that was supposed to help. But neither really work all that well for me.
Most of the time if you find it difficult to take a really deep breath, then you are prob having an attack, even if its just a mild one.
I was just diagnosed with it about 6 years ago in college. I was VERY sick with flu, broncitis, etc and when I was feeling better, I still couldnt stop coughing. I coughed for months after my other illnesses went away. My mom made me go to the doctor and get it checked because it was keeping me up at night.
I went to a specialist and they gave me some breathing tests in the hospital and was able to say Yes, its definately asthma.
