I do a 5K every Thanksgiving day and it's one of my favorite things. I look forward to the "Turkey Trot" every year. I don't really do much training for it though. I use the treadmill 5 days a week all year round so my regular cardio workouts keep me in OK shape.
As for the actual race, what I like to do as motivation is make a playlist on my Ipod just for the race. I choose music that keeps my energy up and usually songs I haven't been listening to lately (so that I enjoy the music while it's playing.) I also use the playlist to keep my timing. I know that I want to be so far on the race by a certain song and so much further along by another song and so on.
I also like to "pick out" certain runners in front of me and mentally decide to "beat them." I speed up until I pass them and then I'll pick somebody else to try to beat. It keep me focused on something other than just pounding the pavement.
My best advice is that it's supposed to be fun! There is nothing quite like the feeling you get when you cross that finish line. It's such a feeling of accomplishment.
In terms of training I know a lot of people have used the couch to 5k training program with great success. http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml
I picked up running about 5 years ago when I started I was overweight and had not run since high school now I've done a couple of marathons and 5+ distance runs I also ran a 5k at about 2 months postpartum... and I am currently training for a 10 miler in April and I'll be 7 months postpartum then
So you can definitely do this! Let us know how it goes!

You totally just made my day! The couch to 5k is the one I was planning on doing. And, I am overweight and haven't ran much since highschool! Woo-hoo!
The run I hope to enter is 87 days away (The Dexter-Ann Arbor Run, for the 2 or so other Michiganders on here). So there is time, just not a lot.

I should do this too - I need a goal!

You should do this too. I'd say it would be fun, but I don't know if I quite believe that just yet. I have long maintained that I only run when being chased, so that has got to change. I have always liked the idea of running, just not the running part. Time to embrace it!
