It sounds like you got a bad pair. Ipod earbuds shouldn't be *that* bad.

If you want to conserve $, I have a second pair of earbuds that I created that may sound *better* than the etymotics. I got a pair of The Plug from Koss (you can find these at Best Buy, too) http://koss.com/koss/kossweb.nsf/04ProductDetailCall?ReadForm&Portable+Stereophones^THEPLUG for about $15, then I removed the earbud part and replaced them with the soft silicon earbud that I bought from Etymotic for $12 http://etymotic.com/ephp/er20.aspx

Honestly, my Plug/Ety combo is one of the best sounding headsets out there.

I purchased those Apple earbuds as well and I hate them. They didn't seem to fit my ears right plus the sound quality wasn't all that great. I am currently back to using the standard earplugs that came with my mini. I should have tried to return the earbuds but I never got around to it, but if it's not to late for you...I would suggest returning them and researching other options.
