July 14 I get my tonsils out. I have been hearing the older you are the worse it is (for tonsils especially). Which makes sense because the younger you are the faster your body can heal, blah, blah, blah. The doctor said that kids junior high age usually recover pretty quickly, but they are still asked to take it easy, but after about 20 it starts to get bad. I am 23, so I am a little freaked.
I have talked to 3 people who have had their tonsils out. Two of them just had it done recently and they are 23 and 26. The 26-year-old has had a baby and she said having her tonsils out was the worse thing she has gone through. A few days after the baby she was feeling okay, but it was two weeks before she really felt like becoming a real person again. Basically, the 23-year-old said the same. My sil had hers out when she was 17 and she also said it was horrible, but she is the biggest drama queen, so I don't put a lot of stock in what she said. She has zero tolerance for pain.
Is it really this bad? I know it is surgery, but it only last an about 20 min. There are no major incisions. I know there needs time for you throat to heal, but it is a sore throat. I just find it hard to believe that I am going to feel like crap for 2 weeks. That is so long. Any thoughts? Thanks!

my brother's 15 & got his out a few months ago. he was kind of out of it & sore at first but definitely not for two weeks. he said it wasn't that bad & he's usually a whiner.
I remember that Dr Andrew Weil has a bunch of suggestions on what to do before surgery, including Vitamin C (with increased dosage on day of) . http://www.drweil.com.
You're 23 and getting your tonsils out; I'm 38 and too chicken to get my wisdom teeth out. Hope that makes you feel better! Any surgery is serious, so just because it doesn't take long, that doesn't mean that it isn't scary, dangerous, etc etc.
Take a brave friend with you to hold your hand and you'll be fine Good luck!
