Random question on interviewing
Permalink Closed

The title is not really exact, but I couldn't do better...

A premise:
My contract witht he pharm company is expiring at the end of the month. I am pretty confident they'll renew the contract, but looking around anyway.
A friend of mine sent me a message, telling me she is leaving to move to her bf's city, and if I were interested in her position. It's a higher position than I have now, but the palce is about one hour from home (now it takes me about 45 minutes to get to work).
I sent the resumé, her boss replied today telling me to contact a prof at the University of Rome for a first interview. Tried to call him today to see if we could arrange for this afternoon (I am home sick, but I could make the effort since university is not too far from home). Of course he's not in his office and he didn't reply to my email yet, so the interview will probably happen another day.
My question is: what do you girls usually say to get out of work when you need to go to an interview?
I am pretty upset I'll have to ask for a permission to leave earlier (or to get in late) and these hours will not be paid. But, what excuse do you tell them to justify your early leave?

Thanks a lot!

I haven't had to use any excuses yet but you could always go with one of these: a doctor's appointment, dentist visit, repair/maintenance at your apartment/home.

I'd go for the last one: if I have a doc appointment, they require me to show a certificate from the doctor with date and time of the visit!
Anyway, it's not too bad: I'll have to leave one hour only earlier next week to be at the appointment.

Ugh when I was interviewing I had to use all of the above bc usually they schedule several interviews and theyre all during work hours. I even tried to do it on a lunchbreak which made me like an hour late getting back. One time won't matter but it gets risky when you have to explain several absenses. Maybe you can say something came up at the dr and you need to do bloodwork, then if you get a second interview you can say you need to review the bloodwork. Same thing works for dental appts bc you often have to go back a week later.

Aw man it stinks that you have to show a receipt for the dr/dentist! Can you take a vacation day on such short notice? Hmmm maybe that's not a good idea...because then if the reject your vacation day request and you still leave early, that might piss them off...

I guess you could feign an illness and "go home sick" - then just say it must have been food poisoning or a stomach virus or something, which is something that you don't really have to go to the doctor for but it still keeps you from being able to work!

Taking your spouse/parent to an appointment? If you drive to work, car trouble is good for a morning interview.

yup, I think I'll have to take my mom somewhere...
I can't say I am sick and leave early, because they'd need a doctore certificate in that case too! And I cannot take a day off because I don't have anymore... It's a pretty sucky situation!

Anyway: my itnerview is next tue, I'll leave at 4, and hopefully they won't give me any problems.

Thanks girls...

Could you find a reason to go to the doctor and do both (killing two birds with one stone)?  Do you have a mole you need looked at or something that has been bothering you in any way?  That way you could get the doctors note but and still get paid.  Just a thought!
