At what point do I rely on iTunes to hold all my CD music and clearout the actual CDs? DH and I have TONS of CDs, and they take up a lot of storage space. More than 1/2 of the collection has been loaded to iTunes for our iPods. I'm slowly making my way through the other half and uploading those.
So, I guess I wonder how secure the collection is and whether I should ditch the discs. Where could I donate or sell them? I would have soooo much more storage in the living room if I could convince myself to get rid of them!
I don't know...I'd be terrified of my computer crashing or something. If you're going to get rid of CDs, I personally would make sure to back up all my CDs on an external harddrive as well as my computer. Then if one of those things fails...the other one still has everything.

Or you could always just transfer all the discs and their leaflets into a CD binder, and recycle all the jewel cases. That way you still have all the discs, but they take up tiny fraction of the space they do with cases.

This is what I have been doing, minus the backing up part. I need to get an external hard drive yet.
And donation-wise, I'd say Goodwill or another similar place is the best place to take them.

We've had terrible luck going cd-less. At one point our computer crashed and we lost every album that we had downloaded from iTunes. I'd recommend at the very least backing up all of your music on an external hard drive before ditching your cd's. The other option is to pack the cds in a box and put them in your attic or basement (if you have either one). That way they're out of sight, but you still have them. I also like Elle's idea of putting them in a cd book so they take up less room.
I don't know. I guess I love the idea in theory, but it doesn't seem completely practical yet.

Just FYI -- I don't think storage of cd's in a hot environment is a good idea -- they could warp easily and then they're useless.
My husband has so many cd's -- really an absurd amount -- but if our computer dies one day, we'll have the info b/c he insists on keeping the disks. I say follow Elle's suggestion and put the cd's in binders or thin sleeves and store in boxes. Maybe an under-bed box? That way they're out of the way, but you can hold onto them in a temperature-controlled environment.

I wouldn't get rid of them either, but like NCshopper said, they don't have to take up "prime real estate" in the living room. Box them up and put them elsewhere. Ours are in a linen closet that we don't use for linens.
I'm with everyone else. Computers crash and Ipods get accidentally erased (trust me, it's not that hard to do.) I currently store my CD under my bed in a long banker check box (bought it at Office Max) but I might try Elle's idea of putting them in a binder sans jewel case.
I like Elle's suggestion - put them in a binder and trash the jewel case.
As far as the external hard drive, I just found one on buy.com for $100 with 1TB of space. I can't wait for it to arrive so if you are looking check over there. :)
