Anyone have ideas on how to divide a studio?
Permalink Closed

Long story short I am finally moving out on my own!  Woohoo!  I found a studio apartment last night that is a sizable long room with 2 windows at one end.  Right now all I have is bedroom furniture so I will be buying any "living room" items from scratch.  I was thinking I could corner off the bed then use a bookshelf like below to "divide" the space, then add a loveseat and maybe a small table.

Have you guys ever tried this or have any creative ideas about living in a studio apartment?

I feel like Domino (now defunct, but you can probably find old issues at the library or online) magazine has done a ton of studio articles.

While I like the idea of the bookcase, the anal-retentive in me would get frustrated with having to look at the non-spine side of the books, the plain paper side. But, you could always do the bookcase with-out books and instead just little pretty things.

I also really like the idea of screens. You wouldn't even have to get the traditional, Chinese types. I'm sure that Ikea or the like would make plain ones.

Oh! And look what popped up when I typed in "room dividers Ikea" into Google!

Good luck with setting up the studio! I'm so pleased you'll be by yourself with no nasty, stupid roommates!

I think it was this month's Glamour that featured a studio layout. Nate Berkus (often on the Oprah show) made over his sister's studio apartment.

I know he used a loveseat at the foot of the bed to portion it off but make it look big (instead of a screen).

Congrats on the new space! Much luck!
Besides the mentioned dividers ( screens, love seat, book case) I also love curtains. You just install the rods & screw into the ceiling on the sides of the room, where you define your sleeping/working/living space, pick interesting room appropriate fabric: either in funky print or sheer panel, flat or very cheered abundant flowy light fabric. You can always close or open those according to your convenience & privacy needs.

My SIL has the cube-style book shelf in her apartment as a room divider and its so pretty.

She has put on a combo of books and vases, photo frames, knick nacks, etc. You don't really notice the paper side of the books. You probably would if you packed it full of just books though.

Thanks for all the help guys!!! Those links are incredible, Sibeski. I think I'll def have to play around with either a loveseat or the cubes. I thought about the "spine side" bothering me but I have small books, I could probably double-pack them on either side anyway. I'd also fill each cube w diff stuff, I tend not to hold on to books too much.
