Do I have to wear a bathing suit?
Permalink Closed

Hey Ladies,
I have my firm outing on Thursday -- we're have a BBQ at someone's beach house, then heading to their beach. I don't have a bathing suit I feel comfortable wearing in front of my co-workers. The weather is iffy (may rain). Do I need to wear one, or can I just hang out on the beach in shorts and a tank?

I don't want to scramble to get a suit just for this one event -- I have one i wear to the gym to swim, but I wouldn't wear that to this event (not enough, ahem, support). I don't know how much use I may get out of a suit for this season -- I haven't been to the beach yet and may only go 1-2 times this summer yet (or not at all if the weather continues to be rainy).

Your opinions? Thanks!

I would wear shorts and a tank, and make no excuses. if anyone asks, I'd say something like "I didn't have a suit appropriate for work" and let them wonder -- you can have fun with it. I wouldn't in any way feel non-participatory not swimming. I'm sure you will not be the only one.

You could just say that you listened to the weather report and since it called for rain, that you didn't bring your suit. I also like D's suggestion of saying that you don't have a work-appropriate suit.

Or, ya know, you could just say the dog ate it.

You definitely don't have to - honestly I'm kind of surprised that this is a business outing. No way would I want to be so scantily clad in front of all the people I work with!

Just say you didn't feel like swimming. It's true, and I'd be willing to bet that more people will not swim than will.

I don't think you have to wear a swim suit, if shorts & a tank make you comfortable - go for them!

I don't think you'll be the only one not swimming. Just do shorts & a tank, you'll be fine. Have fun, sounds a lot better than any work outtings I've been to!

I see no reason to wear a bathing suit in front of coworkers either. Would you be more comfortable in a sundress versus shorts/tank?

I agree. You will be fine in shorts and a tank or a sundress. I would never want to wear a swimsuit in front of the skeevy men I work with.

Thanks everyone -- the firm held the outing even though it was scheduled to rain -- and it did -- ALL DAY. So, most of the "outing" was spent indoors playing Scrabble. With lawyers. The rule book got a workout. Anyway, I didn't wear a bathing suit and it was all fine. Thanks for your help everyone.
