Help! First REAL apartment
Permalink Closed

Hi all!

So I'm moving into my first real post-college apartment in New York City on the 24th (!!!) I need help though! I have no idea how to go about furnishing the whole thing (esp my bedroom as I have roommates with couches, TV, etc). I need EVERYTHING since I'm flying there - bed, desk, chair, curtains, bed stuff, dresser, the whole nine. I've hit up IKEA online for a possible desk, chair and shelves, but that's all I have done so far! Any ideas on how to do it stylish, more adult than dorm, and CHEAP!? Any good places in the city (new yorkers)? Any tips on which scary cheap mattress place to buy a bed? Help!

Ikea is a mainstay for new yorkers. Also the door store and west elm. I had a really really really hard time finding a sofa that I liked and ended up going out to Long Island (car necessary) to go furniture shopping on Route 110 (Amityville area I think). If you are in a walk up building delivery will sometimes cost more too so make sure you ask. Also if you like vintage stuff hit up some of the flea markets you can get some great finds. I saw a great set of lucite lamps this past weekend at the Hells Kitchen Flea Market.

Also for mattress go to Sleepys or rockaway bedding everyone should be having memorial day sales. My thought would be to get there and if you are moving in immediately hit up bed bath and beyond and get an air mattress till your bed comes. you can then store and use it when you have guest. Do you have a roommate? What neighborhood are you moving to?

Congratulations and welcome to New York!

Getting furniture here can be hard since most people don't have cars and there aren't many big cheap furniture stores in the city. There are a few small stores that sometimes have good deals on things especially if you can get a floor model. One is Gothic Cabinet Craft which has plain wood furniture and a bunch of locations and the other is Straight from the Crate which has some kind of tacky and cheap things but I got a nice pull-out loveseat there a few years ago and it has held up well.

For mattresses, like nyc_shopgirl said most of the places tend to have good sales. You just need to shop around. I went around to a bunch of stores and took the flyers home to compare the prices.

If you let us know what neighborhood I can try to make more specific recommendations.

Thanks! I've ordered a cheap desk/nightstand/shelves/chair from IKEA. So those are taken care of if I can figure out how to put them together! Mostly I need a bed and dresser now. I'm in Murray Hill but I lived in the east village last summer so I don't really know what's in the area. I've heard of Sleepy's and have also checked out craig's list. What do you think about getting one from craig's list -- way too scary/possibly gross? I hate getting terrible cheapy furniture but I'm on quite the budget because my industry doesn't really pay entry-level very well (who does except I-bankers, right?) Anyhow thanks for the advice and any more is much appreciated!

Hi I'll be in this same situation in August when I move to Houston!  I'm just going to look around some places and find one with 0% for 12 months and pay stuff off slowly.

I would be kind of iffy about getting a mattress from Craig's List but if you go and check it out in person you should be able to get a sense of how old it really is and if the owner seems clean! Also there are those hypo-allergenic cases that you can get which might ease your mind.

If you decide to bite the bullet and buy a new one there is a Sleepys in Murray Hill ( 201 EAST 34th STREET @ 3rd Ave).

There are also a bunch right near each other a bit further uptown:
1-800 Mattress: 991 3rd Avenue @ 59th St. 2nd Floor
Sleepys: 157 E. 57TH ST. @ 3rd
Rockaway Bedding: 969 Third Ave b/tw 57th and 58th

Craig's list is a great source for other furniture though.
