breakup etiquette?

I've been dating a guy long-distance for about 6 mo (I posted a while ago about him). He wasn't putting as much effort into the relationship, but it wasn't a real problem until recently. I've barely spoken with him in the last week, and there's no "babe" type stuff - until now it was multiple times a day and lots of affectionate stuff. It has been finals, so we've each been really busy. Still, there's other stuff, so because of him I won't see him until September.

He's suddenly gotten a lot of bad news, so he's been in a horrible mood. I need some time off, probably to totally end the relationship, also - here's where it gets fun - because there's a guy here who I have a huge crush on. We watched a movie with mutual friends a couple of nights ago, and he was doing his best to kiss me, which I didn't let happen. I really wanted to though! I definitely wouldn't have an actual relationship with him, just a little fun.

So 2 problems:
I'd been waiting until the long-distance guy is in a better mood to say something - I'd feel bad. Does that mke sense?
Also, am I absolutely not allowed to touch the other guy until I officially say goodbye to the long-distance guy? I know that's the way it works, but I don't feel like anyone would get hurt if I didn't wait...

Don't think I'm a bad person

of course you're not a bad person!  and maybe i missed something but you and long-distance guy aren't exclusive, right?  if you're not exclusive that means you can kiss who you want--in which case, what are you waiting for missie? get smooching!

however, if you and long distance guy are exclusive, do the "i think we should give each other some space and date other people, if we're meant to be, we'll be" conversation and do it sooner rather than later--imo there's never a "good time" to break up w/ someone, just do it as soon as possible so you can both move on.

hth and good luck!

Has the majority of your relationship been long distance?  If so, you two probably don't know each other well enough to really make long distance work.  It is hard enough when two people are already in an established relationship.  I would just say that the distance is hard, and that you would like to date other people, and that maybe this isn't the best thing for you right now.  You never know- the boy that's trying to kiss you could be the love of your life!  I think its worth exploring.

The long-distane thing is exclusive - it's just right not (like, this week), I'm officially in it, but I know it's ending.

Long-distance actually worked remarkably well. First I meet a guy the first time I get tipsy at a party... Then I date him long-distane for 6 months.... Definitely atypical. It's just that right now, even though we do great when we're together or have lots of time, I don't rank high enough on his priority list when he's busy.

F*ck it, Splash. Just tell him. It's like esquiress said, there's never a good time to break up with someone. If there's someone else that you're interested in, tell the old one goodbye and move on to the new one. You're in college, right? That's what we do in college. We're not bad people - just normal.

Just be honest and you've got no worries. I honestly do have a problem with overlapping relationships. It's just not fair to anyone involved, including yourself. Be honest with the soon-to-be ex and everything will be a-okay.
