The Great Closet Implosion of 2009
Permalink Closed

So when I arrived home from work Friday afternoon I discovered my closet imploded. There was a shoebox avalance, a handbag waterfall, and the total collapse of all my hanging items. In short I have a beautiful mess.

It is a small closet and was a white coated wire shelf with the rod hanging underneath. After DH and I patch the drywall and touch up the paint we'll need to give my closet a makeover (Yay!).

In the meantime, I need to design myself a new closet (on the cheap. DH is out of a job in 32 days), and I will need to eliminate a good portion of my wardrobe unless I come up with some great storage solutions. I weed out my closet fairly regularly, so getting rid of a lot is going to be hard for me.

Does anyone have a great storage solution, closet recommendations, or a horror story to tell?

Oh no! That's horrid!
I'd look into rolling racks, storage boxes and cube shelving for cheap alternatives.

I recently made over my shoe collection using this kit from Container Store:

I love that I'm able to use "vertical" space - by stacking you get a lot of mileage.  Also the way they stack, its easier to grab boxes in the middle and you can see everything at a glance.

Here's my "after":

(notice the curving of the bar.. I'm probably going to have an avalanche soon)

Aww, that sucks. I'd try to think of alternative storage solutions. I only keep my seasonal clothing in my closet and store the rest in large tubs in the basement. I wrap my shoes in towels to prevent scuffs. I also put dryer sheets in with my clothes in the tubs (but I don't store items that are cashmere or silk this way.)

This happened to me in high school and it tore part of the ceiling out too which dropped black soot crap all over everything. Most of it was ruined:(
