So on the spanish website Univison.com, it has an article that says that Katie Holmes suffers from Herpes, simplex 1,....wtf!!!!!!! Is this a rumor, I'm confused.
Yes, very common. Anyone who has ever had a cold sore or fever blister probably has it. Really not a big deal. It is usually dormant for long periods of time, then you can break out from sunburn or having anything that causes a dip in your immune system.
I feel bad for her. They can be annoying and somewhat painful. The ones she's sporting in that photo are really big too.
I have Herpes, simplex 1. I get this big nasty cold sores the size of a quarter that is right next to and sometimes in my eye. I get them about twice a year- mostly in the winter. It toltally sucks because I miss school for like two weeks and I can't see. So not fun.
It is so fun when I get to go to the pharmacy and pick up my prescription of Valtrex- commonly known as the STD herpes medicine. I always feel like I need to explain that is for my eye.

yeah, my husband gets them but only inside his mouth, thank goodness! But I know you can catch it so the kids and I dont share drinks with him. Well we try to remember not too, its hard when he's the dad and the hubby not to share :)
Yeah, she tends to get cold sores near her mouth. I remember her saying that in an interview once.
I can't believe she dared to go out like that with all the media hype surrounding her and Tom Cruise. But it's good that she doesn't seem to be too embarrassed by it, since it IS common.
It's totally common. My bestfriend has it and gets cold sores/fever blisters on her mouth. I refuse to let her use my lipgloss and she always gets mad but geez! I don't want those things if I can help it!
Chickenpox is a form of the herpes virus, too. So is shingles, which I've had and soooo suck. Usually only old people or people with AIDS get it because their immune system is so low. I blame my bout on first year law school with all its stress and the cold that stayed with me for two months. Stupid law school.

Yeah, don't let her use your chapstick because even if it is dormat you can still get it.

Poor Katie! I have HS1 too, and I have it so badly that I have to take daily medication -- otherwise I'll get one at least 5-6 times a year (even with the meds, I still get them 1-3x per year). I am SO self-conscious when I have one; I can't imagine how she feels with these photos around.
Also, people confuse HS1 with HS2 (the STD). They're different strains of the same virus. Believe me, I work in a high school and the kids love to make nasty comments about where I got it. I've had it for as long as I can remember -- it's def. not an STD.

blubirde - never share chapstick, toothbrushes or anything else with someone while they have an outbreak. Technically, though, it would be very rare for you to get it if she wasn't having/about to have an outbreak. The only time the virus can transmit in the "dormant phase" is when the virus "sheds" a few times per year (unfortunately, this period is undetectable). But don't worry too much. I kiss my husband all the time (not during an outbreak, though) & he's never gotten it.
