Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are dating, PEOPLE has learned. Cruise, 42, and Holmes, 26, "have only been dating a couple of weeks," says a friend of Cruise.

The romance was confirmed by his rep after he and Holmes were photographed together, hand in hand, in Rome on Wednesday evening.

"She's a really genuine person," says the friend. "She's the real deal."

Cruise split with girlfriend Penelope Cruz last year. He and Nicole Kidman, who have two children, divorced in 2001.

Holmes and actor Chris Klein broke off their engagement in March. The actress, who launched her career on TV's Dawson's Creek, appears in the summer action film Batman Begins. Cruise stars in director Steven Spielberg's War of the Worlds.

kinda grosses me out... she is SO beautiful and he is just--yech. Have never been into him and by now I think he is just starting to look old. Not a hot +40 man... (unlike Clive Owen, yummmm)

Oh my god!!! Katie Holmes is living out my dream! She's my own age, too. This was the life I imagined for myself a few years ago.... I'm so jealous! (I know some people don't dig Tom but he's been on my top-5 for quite a few years so for loyalty's sake I still sort of love him.)

I bet she grew up lusting after him. See? Childhood dreams really do come true!

what?  ok.  I see the sex appeal of Clive Owen, but better looking or hotter than Tom Cruise?  Nuh uh.  And Katie Holmes is pretty, but except for her youth, she is in no way in a league above Tom Cruise.  Actually, I find her kind of plain, but appealing in a sweet girl next door and down to earth way.  Guess it's a matter of opinion!


Though I will agree that this relationship grosses me out too, it's for obviously different reasons.  Mostly for the fact that Holmes was a CHILD when Tom Cruise rose to fame.

I can't believe ya'll are dogging out my man Tom!!!! I guess I'm a bit biased in that I got the Top Gun VHS (yes, VHS, DVD was not out yet) for my 15th birthday & watched that volleyball scene EVERY SINGLE DAY for as long as I can remember, at least a year. SIGH.

But yes, she's a bit young. Odd couple

SOOO weird!  I just heard it on tv this morning too.  Could Tom be the reason for her breakup with Chris Klein?  Tom is a hottie, but she is too cute girl-next-door for him!  I'll have to tell my BF, because he was excited when she broke off her engagement (he's got a major thing for her!)

I heard about this on my drive to school.  The people on the radio think its just for Tom's new movie opening to get some publicity and Katie has a new movie coming out too which might help her out.  I don't see it lasting at all.

Yeah, Im not so weirded out by this.  I think he's a handsome older guy & shes an attractive girl.  I guess, IMO, at her age (close to mine) a big age difference isnt that big of  a deal.  Id go out with him!  Ive been attracted to older guys, I cant help but think "hmm- wonder what kind of tricks he knows." Sorry- mind is always in the gutter. . .  ;)

Ew.  There is no male celeb I loathe more.  I cannot for the life of me understand his appeal - he's a weirdo scientologist buck-toothed weasel-face whose acting ability encompasses like 3 facial expressions.  Yucko. 


I loved Katie Holmes with Chris Klein.  I am disappointed in her. 


The age difference doesn't bother me (I dated a 43 year old when I was 24, and my Dad is 12 years older than my mom so I don't find age differences at all odd), it's the fact that he's creepy & beady-eyed.

this news makes me so sad!  chris & katie used to frequent the restaurant i used to work at & chris is the NICEST guy ever!!  he was always so thankful & appreciative when we would seat them right away & always thanked us on the way out (usually celebs & non-celebs alike ignore the hostesses' goodbyes).  they were such a cute couple & i think tom & katie just don't fit.  not necessarily the age thing, just they don't even seem to be on the same planet in the universe of celebs.  not sure that makes sense, but i just never woulda seen this coming.
