Good Digital Camera
Permalink Closed

My boyfriend and I have decided to join the masses and get a digital camera.  Everyone has one and they just seem so  much simplier and nicer than your normal 35mm camera.  Can any of you recommend a good one?  We'd like one that's not outrageously priced, but has pretty good quality.  I've heard Cannon's are really good?

i just bought a Canon A95.  my first dig camera too!  i love it so far, it is great!  it isn't tiny, so if that's something that matters to you, you might look into the Canon Digital Elphs or the new A510/520 models, but I like the A95 because it has lots and lots of settings, some manual controls, and lots of room to grow into.  manual settings are of course, unnecessary, but my fiance and i are interested in learning more about photography, so we thought it would be fun to play around with.  especially since if the pictures are bad - no loss!  price was a big factor for me too, i got this one for around $265 i think on Amazon.

i read TONS of reviews and had a pretty hard time deciding, but i'm happy with my choice.

i suggest reading at least a couple reviews.  cnet.com is pretty good, lots of customer comments, and helps you narrow down cameras based on what you need (or help you figure out what you need, if you're aren't even there yet!).  I recommend dcresource.com though, for really thorough and easy to understand reviews, plus sample photos taken with each model.

I have a Canon A95 also and I love it. I wouldn't get any other brand except Nikon but they are more expensive.  You can look at some of my past thread style pics to see how the pictures turned out. I've only printed from snapfish and their quality sucks so I don't know how they really look on paper but its 5.0 megapixels which is good so I'm assuming they look nice printed out.

I have a Canon Elph (I think it's the SD300 model - 4MP and 3x optical zoom) and I am really pleased with it. My only complaint is that the battery warning light goes off too late but other that that it's been great. I drove myself crazy reading reviews and finally wound up getting the Elph because my friend has had one for years and loves it and her pictures looked good.

I have a Nikon Coolpix 4200 and I it. It's really easy to use and it takes really nice pictures. If you're just taking personal pictures, I think a Nikon or Canon with 4.0 megapixels is plenty.

Stay away from Sony and HP...they are cheaper, but the lens is lower quality. Also a friend of mine has a Kodak and while his takes good pictures, it's not as user friendly as my Nikon.

I have pics on threadstyle too, which have crappy lighting though...PM me and I'll send you some better pics.

I have a Canon A80- it's about a year old.  You can check my pics out in threadstyle too.  I'm pretty happy with it and now they have newer/better models.  Mine is a little heavy though.

I also recommend the Canon Digital Elph. I have one of the really early models (S110), but everyone I know that has gotten the more recent models have been extremely happy with them too.

My friend just told me she has the Canon Powershot SD300 Digital Elph too and that she loves it. How much did you pay for it cc and where did you get it?  I think we are going to check this one out.  It is nice and small.

OK I got the model name of mine wrong. I have the S410. Both the S410 and the SD300 are 4MP with a 3x zoom but I'm not sure what the difference is except that the S410 is cheaper (I paid $250 on Amazon).

The zoom is small so it took some getting used to since my 35mm camera has a huge lens, but it works well for my purposes and I've been really happy with the picture quality.

Here are some pictures that I took with it. The original images were like 3x as big and I didn't even have the image quality on the highest setting.
