Is your mate an optimist or pessimist?
Permalink Closed

I am an optimist at heart, I am really happy with what I have in terms of career, relationships, etc...However my SO is such a pessimist. He always assumes the worst and he gets really moody. A bad week at work means he is usually tired or "has a headache". I usually manage to cheer him up after a little while, but I feel like it is so draining. Do any of you guys experience this? Are you the optimist or pessimist in the relationship?

I am a little of both. Depends on the subject. But my B/f is a total Optimist and he normally has to make me see the good in things! I don't think I could date someone who is a pessimist because if I was in that mood, we would both be very down.

I have the same situation with my FH. I tend to look at the what is and he tends to look at the what isn't. He constantly complains about his job. Not so much the job as the other people he works with. It just becomes so draining sometime to always have to worry about putting him in a better mood. Ugh it's irritating even typing about it. So I'm the optimist and he's the pessimist. But do you ever feel like he's rubbing off on you more then you are rubbing off on him. ie are you becoming more negative cynical being with him?

I'm defintely more the optimist. He loves to be dramatic, but I just don't let him get away with it. He does the same to me though, which is good cause we balance each other out. If one of us is feeling pessimistic, the other will act optimistic just to annoy each other. Last night we were both feeling shitty about a lot of stuff like finals etc., and we got each other into even worse moods after bitching about it. I ended up not studying and just going to bed and listening to Elliot Smith. So I guess it's good we like to annoy each other or else I would be severely depressed.

I am an eternal pessimist while Brian is an optimist...so we seem to balance eachother out

More of a realist, actually.

Realist with a pessimistic bent. But truthfully, we balance each other out...if one of us is feeling bad, the other will be more optimistic and cheerful.

Did you ever see those FedEx commercials where everyone say's, "We're doomed!"  whenever someone says something has gone wrong.  That is the perfect way to explain my SO.  He always thinks things can't be done or worse case scenarios.  With work stuff it's totally draining, but sometimes I can get him to laugh at himself when he gets carried away.

I am totally optimistic and have a romantic view about most things.  I can't even deal with negativity; I usually just do it (whatever it is) without thinking about it so I can't get through a bad situation.

We balance each other out nicely.  He actually prefers me to be so carefree and happy.  It would be nice to see him not have such a jaded view sometimes though.

i am SUCH a pollyanna!  i think when i am dealing with sick patients all the time, you have to.  you know they are miserable so you can't say it will get better, cuz you never know, but in the same breath you don't want to be pessimistic.

sometimes i see myself being pessimistic, the bf can be at times, but overall, we balance each other out.  i have friends who are always miserable and it's draining.  especially when i give them advice (aka. don't call that devil girl she's messing with your head...and he calls her anyways and then cries to me how she made him feel bad) and they don't take it.  it's hard to continue to be motivating.  but that's a whole other post.

I'm a little bit of both..... my mind processes too fast for me to control sometimes. When something comes up, I fear the worst. However, I'm an optimist who feels he can fix anything. My SO, on the otherhand, seems to be a pessimist. But I guess I can let her answer that one.

This is me and my SO - the only problem is I dont know that we balance each other out because sometimes I get annoyed at how pessimistic he is!!!!
