So. Bored.

So, I know this sounds horrible, but I really wish my company would just freaking lay me off. I literally do nothing all day. I heard my boss giving someone else work that should be mine, so I'm pretty sure they want me to quit (not lay me off because that would mean I could get unemployment).

Long story short, despite my best and repeated efforts to grow with this company and get more responsibility, my workload has actually decreased significantly to the point where I'm nothing more than a glorified (overpaid- but I'm not complaining about that- I'll happily collect the paycheck) proofreader. It's really quite ridiculous when I'm sitting here all doing with absolutely nothing to do, but have several skills they should be using (web/multimedia/seo/usability/etc), especially in this economy. It just boggles my mind. I've gone from one absolute extreme with my last company (I had so much responsibility that they replaced me when I quit with two people and an intern) to here (nothing. to. do.).

Anyway, I've pretty much given up even trying to get more work here because they clearly don't want to give it to me and I honestly don't care why at this point. People have their theories as to why (boss is threatened by me, doesn't like other women, whatever- she's a bit of a whackadoo, anyway). But regardless, I'm just done.

I'm not really asking for anything in particular here, just venting. I know I'll be out of here soon enough with the move to California, which is why I just don't care, but I feel like I'm wasting so much time here when I could be doing so many other things (jewelry, grad school work, freelancing, etc). I feel bad wishing for a lay off, but the bf and I sat down and figured out our finances and decided if I get laid off, that would be the perfect out to move to California.

So, I'm just hanging around here, bored out of my mind, waiting to see what happens and applying for jobs in Cali and looking for freelance work. Boredom is one of the worst things for someone like me- my brain goes a mile a minute and I constantly have a million ideas, but I come in here and it's like my brain shuts off.
Fun stuff.

Thanks for letting me vent. I just wasted about five minutes. :)

Ugh. That sucks - especially the wasting time part. It doesn't sound like you're motivated to actually tell the whackadoo that your workload has been light and you're available for more projects?

No, I'm not. Mainly because I've done it more times than I can remember already and was promised more projects and an expanded job description. She even asked me to write my ideal job description for her, so I did and we had a meeting about that.  We also had an hour and half lunch meeting to go over new job duties. Last time she mentioned something was January and it was an oh, by the way we're going to have you start doing this. And still. Nothing. I just give up. I'm tired of following up on all of these meetings only to end up in more of the same meetings and getting empty promises (or worse- grunt work that an intern should be doing).

That really sucks. Is there anything you can do during the workday for your other stuff? Like sketch designs, make purchases, follow up on correspondence, finances, etc? That could at least help with the boredom issue and maybe free up some of your other time. You're probably already doing what you can, but just a thought.

Sorry you're going through that. That really sucks.

I hate boring jobs/lack of work. It is the WORST. The days just drag on and on and you start to feel like, "Why did I even bother coming here today?" It's depressing and I have so been there.

Are you still going back to school?

NCShopper, I do some of those things, but I don't want to be all obvious and get fired either (Big Brother, you know?). I do the things that I can do (some school work, etc) without looking obvious.

Kitty, you're right, it is the worst. It's so hard to drag it into work because it's just another day of nothing. I'd rather be out of my mind busy than bored. I'm really terribly apathetic about the whole thing, too, since I plan to be out by this time next year at the latest. I just waved the white flag and figured I'd just collect the paycheck and stash as much as I can into savings.

And yes, I'm in school right now for an MFA in fashion merchandising and my thesis project will be the boutique (mini-chain of boutiques) that I mentioned here a few months ago. So, I'm super excited about that, but right now from 8-5, I'm unbelievably bored.
