Chicago restaurant recommendations for birthday
Permalink Closed

I am going to be in Chicago for my birthday in April (hooray!) and am looking for a place to eat that would be yummy and fun for a group of 6 (guys and girls). Any recommendations? We're open to all cuisine types but especially love Mexican or any Asian. Thanks!

Ohhh ok I l LOVE this place. It's called
Zocalo
September 19, 2007 update: Dudley Nieto (Xel-Ha, Adobo Grill, Zapatista, San Gabriel Mexican Cafe and more), the acclaimed chef who is almost as well known for his stove-hopping as he is for his food, is now the consulting chef at Zocalo. Nieto ditched the small plates focus; the menu now features regional Mexican fare and a more traditional menu format. Look for entree offerings like camarones al mojo de ajo, jumbo grilled shrimp in a white wine-garlic butter sauce, puntas de res en salsa borracha, grilled skirt steak in a pasilla-mezcal salsa, and carne al pastor, adobo-marinated pork tenderloin with creamy tomatillo salsa.

Edgar and Marcos Castaneda, the cousins behind Zocalo, grew up in the restaurant biz; Edgar's father is the founder of Chicago's Lalo's chain. Although they both spent years working in the family's restaurants, the cousins clocked time at other Latin spots (Nacional 27, Zapatista, Carnivale, Cuatro) before opening this independent restaurant. Zocalo took over the Chilpancingo address in River North; they've toned down the former fiesta-themed decor for a rustic vibe with earth tones and natural woods

I seriously think it's one of the best resteraunts in the city!

I'd recommend Carnival. It's so much fun! It's a latin influenced place. The food is amazing, good wine list and interesting drink list. The inside is decorated like you're inside a Carnival and on some evenings they have dancing & music. Here's a link to the Metromix website with more info.

If you like Asian, a trip to Chinatown is always fun. My favorite place there is Wow Kow (it's the oldest place there and up on the second floor of a building so you get a view too if you're lucky.) There are alot of little stores and other places to eat along the strip.

Colette- I'm going to have to check out Zocalo. I haven't heard of it before but it sounds great.
