I want to take a road trip in my new car so I was thinking Great Falls Montana is only 5 hours. I haven't been there since I was a teenager. Has anyone been there? Is there anything fun to do and more importantly, good places to shop?
Um, you're kidding, right? My roommate is from there, and he and FH are actually there right now. FH said the town isn't anything to sniff at, but I can have him ask roomie's sister if there is any worthwhile shopping nearby. I wouldn't get your hopes up - they all wait and do their 'big shopping' when they are visiting us in Spokane!

I don't know much about Great Falls, Montana but I have spent quite a bit of time in Missoula and I love it (visited an old flame there several times). There is actually cute shopping to be had there and lots of great outdoors stuff, of course, all around. I've also been to W. Yellowstone and that area.
Hmm... Idaho is also good. Jesus I love that part of the country. Good times...

oh wow--i used to spend my summers in a small town outside kalispell and whitefish, up near the canadian border on flathead lake. there's a bit more shopping and stuff to do up there, like outdoorsy types of things. there's not much happening in great falls--it's not really a place that people travel to for pleasure trips, it's more suburban business-y. it is close to yellowstone, though, if you are interested in going there. it's really pretty to drive through.
what city are you in in canada? near calgary, i kind of remember? how about coeur d'alene, idaho? that would be about the same distance and much cuter little town if you are looking for quaint shopping, etc.
the bf and i went there one summer and i loved it. we spent most of the time in yellowstone, but one night (his b-day) we went to bozeman, montana and it just so happened that night was the Taste of Bozeman. it was so much fun! it was like a street fair. seriously, it was one of the highlights of the week there. there were also a lot of galleries, shopping and breweries (mmmm beer) there. if i remember correctly there is a university of montana at bozeman there too.

hey bumblebee, was it Bigfork? I went to a teenytiny school in Condon for 2.5 years and we went up to Bigfork a lot as well as Kalispell and Whitefish :)
lindsayp, that's so funny! i have been to bigfork millions of times. our house was directly across the lake in a tiny town called lakeside. it's much tinier than bigfork, if you can imagine that. we used to take the boat across the lake to go to the restaurants and the little summer stock theater in bigfork, and there was that ranch (bigfork lodge maybe?) where they had activities and horseback riding and stuff. fun memories!
Coeur d'Alene, ID is very nice - beautiful scenery, some decent fishing, and a couple nice 'beaches'. The drive around the lake is sooooo nice - I live in Spokane (only 30 minutes or so from Coeur d'Alene) and FH and I took the drive a couple times last year. If you are in the area I would recommend it.
