OK, I am a big wuss. I have never, ever, ever had a cavity before (I'm 25). I went to the dentist yesterday and I have a bad one! I have to go back in a month and have a real filling (not the little plaster kinds that don't hurt).
I am embarrassed to say it, but I am SO scared! I absolutely hate needles -- the thought of them in my arm freaks me out, and I don't want one in my GUMS! They are going to give me nitrous, though -- will that help? Will I need someone to drive me home? I am freaked out!

I have had a few fillings and it isn't that bad. Honestly it depends on the dentist. Some are just kinder than others, and more skilled! I have never had nitrous. You probably won't feel a thing!! And it is better to get it done than let it go out of fear, trust me on this. Good luck and be strong!!
I had my first filling last year, I am 29, it is not bad at all! in a normal case like mine, the needle in your gums is just a little sting, the drilling is only barely uncomfortable because of the noise more than the pressure, and you can drive yourself home.

I'v had a few (I was a bad brusher as a kid) and I am deathly afraid of needles so I always got nitrous. As long as you do that you will be 100% fine. I got it without once (new dentist wouldn't do it) and it was aweful. You should prob. get someone to drive you home though if you do the nitrous casue you will be pretty dizzy.
My Dentist puts a local anesthetic on the gum before putting the needle in. Be prepared for your mouth to be a little lop-sided afterwards-JUST TEMPORARILY. It's definitely more "uncomfortable" than it is painful because you have all those instruments in there.
I cried last time I got a shot, I'm a huge wuss. However, I got a cavity filled recently and it was really not bad at all. I have a really good dentist, and I was scared when he was shooting me up with novacaine, but overall it really was just inconvenient, not a bad experience. And I'm really awful about this kind of stuff.
LOL, sounds like I will like the nitrous. The hygenist promised me that once you have nitrous, you won't care about the needle. Not sure I believe that totally. My husband has an appt. right before mine, so I will make him take me home.

I didn't need the needle after the gas (I mean it, that stuff is awesome. I asked if I could have a canister to take home, hehe). Oh, and I totally made my husband go with me and sit with me in the room and then drive me home, I'm such a big baby And I when I got home, I had a bowl of ice cream and then slept the rest of the day, the nitrous made me really relaxed and sleepy, but I am kind of a light weight when it comes to that kind of stuff (one small glass of wine can make me tipsy ).
I had to get five! fillings recently because I hadn't been to the dentist in years and years and years, and I was petrified. It turned out to be not so bad. They put some sort of goo on a q-tip and leave it on your gums before they put the needle in. It numbs the area pretty well, so all you feel is a little pinch from the needle. The worst part is really the noise from the drill, but there is no pain during or after. Now, root canals....that's a whole different story
I've never had a cavity but my two front teeth are fake, so I've spent A LOT of time in the dentist office over the years. (I knocked out my permanent teeth two separate times as a kid - I was a bit clumsy and I had temporary fake teeth put in and permanent fake teeth put in. It's actually quite nice because the veneers are so pretty and white and straight - it's justified cosmetic dental work!)
Anyway, they put some numbing stuff, like Oral B cold sore gel but better, on your gums first. Then they stick this huge (yes, it's big) needle in. Having said that, it totally doesn't hurt. There's a pinching feeling at first and that's it. For me, they had to do several shots, but you can't feel anything after the first one because your face is all numb.
Don't be scared! The second you stop being scared is the second going to the dentist is no big deal. It's the scared part that makes it awful.
Oh, and for gals that are afraid of shots and needles, here's my advice: watch. They always try to get you to look away but the anticipation and surprise are much worse. I feel much more in control when I'm watching them bring the needle towards me and stick it in my arm, gums, or wherever. I mean, honestly, it's just a little needle so it can't be that big a deal. It's just that we're scared. So take control and you'll feel a lot less scared.
Of course, some people pass out when they see a needle go in their arm or blood come out so... it might not be for everyone!
I've never had a cavity either, but I do have a bonded tooth (in the back) from an accident that I was in. It was just an uncomfortable feeling with all those instruments in my mouth. I've also had some baby teeth (that just didn't want to leave my mouth) pulled and I had nitrous for that and it didn't hurt at all.
I need to make a dentist appt. b/c I'm due for mine and the bonding on the tooth that I had bonded is breaking off--ick!! I hate the dentist more than the doctor. I don't know what I'll do if I have any cavities!!
Is there any way to to know that you have a cavity before you go to the dentist???
