UGH! I am so pissed. I had an Amex card in college (remember the "blue" card? I had to have it because it was cute). Anyway, I cancelled it around the middle of my senior year (01/02) because the interest rate sucked & I had a better one.
Well, in the fall of 02, when I bought my house and ran my credit report, I see that it's showing as an open account. So I call them AGAIN and cancel. I threw away all my stuff from them and thought I was done with it.
Yesterday in the mail I get a notice about their new privacy policy and how it affects my card (!!!). I called and they said my account is still open (wtf?!?!) despite the fact that I've cancelled it twice and haven't used it since 2001.
I cancelled again...this time I asked for a written notice and I am going to keep it in a freakin' lockbox until the next notice I get. How come I can't get rid of them? UGH!

SO annoying! I wonder if the person who handled your cancellation screwed up or if Amex purposely does that. Maybe they figure one day you will find out you still have it and then decide you do want to use it after all.
I never had an Amex (besides the corporate one). They all seem to have yearly rates and I can't see myself paying them when I can just use a regular credit card, pay it off at the end of the month, and pay nothing.
AJ, if that is the case, then you should check out the American Express Cash Back Card. I have one, and last year I got about $250 cash back. It is a no fee card; I have no idea what the interest rate is because I pay it off every month, but since you do too, it may be worth your while to get something back from the CC company for once.

Wow! Really? I should check that out. Were you the one that ended up getting like $2000 back from various credit cards at the end of the year?

It wasn't that much, but I got a little over a grand back via various bonus programs. Plus, we haven't paid for a flight in years (AMEX Delta Skymiles card for our business- it has a yearly fee, but its totally worth it to us considering the plethora of free flights we get).
We do a lot of shopping at Costco, so we got the Costco AmEx. You get reward certificates good toward purchases at Costco. We get 3% back on all food purchases, 2% on all travel related, and 1% back on everything else. The first three months have been interest free. It's a no-fee card as well.
i have amex blue. no idea what the interest is because i pay it in full every month. i love it though, because the rewards program for me is gift certs, so every so often i get a 50$ or 100$ gc to saks (my choice, they also have fun stuff like williams sonoma).
