How much do you pay? I brought some stuff in yesterday, and thought the prices were outragous! $35 to replace a zipper on a dress and $35 to take in a simple skirt. I felt like I was being ripped off- for that money I could have bought a sewing machine and done it myself! Are those normal prices, or should I look for another tailor/ invest in a sewing machine?

well replacing a zipper and depending on the type of zipper it is can be alot of work. also taking in something, depending on what needs to be done, can also be an alot. i would say that a pants hemming should be somewhere between $7-12. i have paid in nyc-area from 7.50 to 10.

i think the things you had done have variable degrees of difficulty... so i'm honestly not that shocked about the prices. i would say if the zipper on the dress was an invisible zipper that's probably why it cost more. replacing a visible zipper... like on a jacket or a pair of pants would be alot less.

i have to invest in a sewing machine. i can sew very well and i used to make clothes for myself in hs. also i'm short and have to hem my pants constantly. i would say if you have to do simple things like hem pants or take up a skirt then get a sewing machine, but doing more complicated things... leave to a tailor, unless you have alot experience.

nope, just a regular old zipper. very easy, the way the dress it cut too (its a halter stle, so no weird stuff up at the neck or anything). I guess I'll have to get a sewing machine- I used to sew ALL the time and was very good... I used to sew my own skating and dance costumes when I was younger!

All my costumes are at my moms house so I don't have pictures. I'll be home in April though and i was thinking about bringing them back with me so maybe I'll pos some pics then.

was an invisible zipper?  or one that you could see the strips of cloth that the zipper is attached to?  if so, invisible zippers are MUCH harder to replace, but i still think the price was out there.  i would pay $25 max for invisible zipper replacement and $15 for regular.

p.s. my mom was a tailor on the side so i know the prices that she charged.
