Lima and Quito
Permalink Closed

I am going to Ecaudor and Peru on Saturday, and will be going to Lima, Puno, Cusco, Quito and the Galapagos Islands.

We're all set with our planning and will have a couple of days in Lima, fly to Puno to see Lake Titicaca, Orient express train through the mountains to Cusco to go to Machu Picchu, a couple of days in Quito, then fly to the Galapagos Islands.

If anyone has been to any of these places, do you have any restaurant/bar/insider info to share?

I also want to rent a jeep in Quito and take the Pan American highway to see a few sites -- my husband is a little concerned about the safety of this, but I think we'll be fine in high traffic areas during the day (I can only assume the highway and sites off it are relatively safe and high-traffic.)

I've done a lot of homework, but if anyone here has any first-hand knowledge, I'd love to hear it!

(I'll post on some travel forums for information too, but I know some of you have travelled in South America.  I've been to Brazil, but Peru and Ecuador are a little more dangerous with the drug wars...)

D! Thst's amazing! Galapogos is my #1 on list of places to see - and depending on DH's job situation next year, we may do the Ecuador/Machu Pichu Peru/Galapoos thing next summer too!

Only things I can think of, everyone talks about A LOT of hiking around Machu Pichu and that it can get REALLY cold. So I'd be sure to have really god hiking shoes, comfy thick and wicking socks, and a really good jacket (maybe layered and light weight). A really good brand I've seen is called Icebreaker. I haven't invested in any pieces yet, but will undoubtedly do so when we start going to colder places.

As for restaurants, I've heard of a Cafe Inkaterra is suposed to be pretty yummy.

Can't wait for your reviews and pictures!!!

Sounds like we have a lot of the same travel tastes!

Yeah, the temperatures are ranging from 30-80 degrees depending on our elevation and time of day.  I'm bringing layers, and we both have waterproof hooded jackets lined in thinsulate, so we're set on the coats.  I'm mainly packing jeans and layers, hiking boots, sandals, maybe a pair of walking shoes, and my frye clogs.  Sticking to casual the whole way -- it'll make for easier packing and we can't have too heavy of bags because some of the flights have strict weight restrictions because they are such small planes (plus I don't want to have to lug around a lot.) People dress pretty casually there anyway.  I'm only bringing one cardigan because I want a good excuse to load up on alpaca sweaters smile  I just bought several pairs of bamboo socks for their anti-bacterial/wicking qualities for hiking (I'm loving bamboo as a fiber lately.)

What city is Cafe Inkaterra in?

Here's a link to some info on the restaurant: http://www.inkaterra.com/en/machu-picchu/services/cafe-inkaterra

And a review: http://travel.nytimes.com/travel/guides/central-and-south-america/peru/machu-picchu/restaurants.html

Yeah - we might have similar travel tastes! Last year DH and I went to Cambodia (to see Angkor Wat) and Malaysia (SUCH yummy foods!). We were going to go to Egypt for our honeymoon but it's kind of dangerous still and we ultimately went to Greece.

On our wish list for travlling (probably in order):

1. Galapagos & Machu Picchu
2. Egypt
3. New Zealand & Australia
4. Argentina (DH) and Madagascar & Seychelles (me)
5. Zermott (DH) and Italy & Spain (me)

You can see where our differences start taking an effect. Brrrrr....

Anyhow - hope you guys have an AWESOME time!

That restaurant is near the train station -- I'll show it to my husband and maybe we can fit it in before we head back to Cusco.

This is where we are staying in Cusco http://www.rumipunku.com/ We're doing a day trip from Cusco on the vistadome to Aguas Calientes/Machu Picchu, hence the fitting in of a restaurant if we have time in Aguas Calientes.

I was just pointing out Cambodia as a place I'd like to go -- I'd love to go see the temple ruins.  As you know, I've been throughout Greece.

Africa, including Egypt, has been ruled out for the same reason you've been ruling it out.  However, I really want to do a safari/Madagascar trip -- that's been high on my list for a while.

I've been to Australia/Tasmania, but not to New Zealand (yet!)

Been throughout Switzerland, but not specifically to Zermott (although they have snow reports for Zermott every day on TV, so you get to see it every morning smile)

I really want to go to Argentina and Chile. South America has been ranking higher on my list these days because of the accessibility and same time zone (for me at least.)

Been through most of Italy and Spain.  Italy is a must - even if you only do Rome.  It's beautiful, the people are very nice, and there's so much history and so many things to see (I'd put that higher on your list if I were you!)

Also high on my list are Nepal and Bhutan.  I'd like to piggyback those onto one of my husband's business trips to India (which I'd also like to see.)

How awesome! I have a friend who went to the Galapagos when she was a kid and she has been dying to go back - she said it was really amazing.
