My bf recently had his first article published in a national magazine and has a few more lined up for publication this spring.  He wants to start putting together a portfolio of his work but isn't sure where to start or what to include.  Has anyone done this or know of any resources we could turn to?  Thanks!!

I was a newspaper reporter for several years -- I don't know if magazines are different, but here's what I did with my clips, and what I teach my journalism students to do:


I (very carefully) cut out all my articles, along with the folio from when they were published. I used double-stick tape to put them on a sheet of white paper, and then xeroxed that sheet so that it was all even. If there are any interesting circumstances, etc. that you would need to explain, you can type that on the sheet before you copy it.  Also, if the design was integral to the piece, I would include a copy of the spread behind the article (usually folded).


I arranged them by date, but you could also do it by type of story. If he reports on many different subjects or for 3-4 magazines primarily, he could also organize it that way


I used a hard-cover, 1/2 inch three-ring binder and plastic sheet protectors (1 per story). I put my resume in the front, and the articles behind it.


I have also heard of people using those large art portfolios, but I prefer this method (less glue involved). I am not sure if magazines are different, but I know there are a couple magazine journalism grads around. HTH

I actually do the same thing as halleybird.  I used a hard cover three ring binder with my resume in the front and then the articles in the back.


I categorize mine first by publication, then by date.  I use dividers to label each different section.

I do the same thing with a leather binder I found at Kenneth Cole.
And I copy the stories from the newspaper website and blow them up or down to fit on one page, instead of pasting. Kinkos is great for this. Then I slide them into plastic protectors, and put extras behind so that the interviewer can keep one with my resume if they want, instead of having everything in this huge binder. It's weird, because it makes NO difference to my skills, but all my bosses have said they were impressed by the binder.
