what random songs (or cd's)  do you like for some inexplicable reason. inspired by the fact that while i was in the shower the most random song ever popped into my head. the song was "lost in you" which is by chris gaines (aka garth brooks when he decided to take a break from country music, create an alter ego and put out an album). i thought that was really funny, so i'm wondering if anyone else has songs like that.

My friends all make fun of me cause I have soooo many random cheesy things I like.  Probably most notably the soundtrack to Mamma Mia.  Whatever, it's fun.  Also, pretty much any "hip pop."

okay, now you're all going to know what a tool i really am...

i don't even know what the song is...but it's in the hp commercial with all the pictures (i think it's for a printer?)...and it goes "picturebook...pictures of your mama taken by your papa a long time ago...."  i'm obsessed with it.  whenever the commercial comes on i sing along.  my bf says he can't see the commercial without hearing the song in my (not so pretty) voice.  LOL

does anyone know if that's a real song?  i should find out...

eta:  in case anyone else cares, it is a real song, by the kinks.  yay!

I was totally obsessed with it too! The song is called Pictures Of You and it is by the Cure.

i'm always so slow when it comes to music, so i'll "discover" a song and be like "i love that new song!"  and my friends will be like "yeah, that song's like...two years old."

it just happened this morning too--kroq was playing it and it's my favorite 'new to me' song:

SUCH GREAT HEIGHTS

by The Postal Service

recorded in Spring 2002

lyrics:

i am thinking it's a sign that the freckles in our eyes
are mirror images and when we kiss they're perfectly aligned
i would like to speculate that god himself did make us into
corresponding shapes like puzzle pieces from the clay
and true, it may seem like a stretch, but its thoughts like this that
catch my troubled head when you're away and i am missing you to death
when you are out there on the road for several weeks of shows and when
you scan the radio, i hope this song will guide you home

they will see us waving from such great heights, "come down now,"
they'll say but everything looks perfect from far away,
"come down now," but we'll stay...

i tried my best to leave this all on your machine but the persistent beat
it sounded thin upon listening
and that frankly will not fly, you will hear the shrillest highs and
lowest lows with the windows down when this is guiding you home.

I love that "Pictures" song, too. And the commercial is a trip.

I am crazy about this band called The Travelling Wilburys. In the '90s a bunch of huge musical icons (Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison with Ringo Starr on drums) got togeather and made two incredible albums just for fun. The songs are all fantastic but it can be hard to find the cd's. For some reason people just don't really acknowledge that they were really a band.

that "pictures of your momma" song is so catchy--it sticks in my head for a long time after i hear it.

i have to say my random-est ones are showtunes, like maddie.  i love "rent" and "hairspray" and "evita" and "les mis."  dorky!!!

Another Travelling Wilburys fan here! I remember loving that song when I was little. I downloaded a bunch of their songs when I had my Kentucky Derby party last year.

I am pretty sure that was the video for "Handle With Care," which was their biggest hit:

"Everybody's got somebody to lean on
Put your body next to mine, and dream on"

and this was Roy's part:
"I'm so tired of being lonely
I still have some love to give
Won't you show me that you really care"

That's right.

I'm really impressed. No one else I know has even heard of The Wilburys. I'm also a really big Tom Petty fan. But that kind of music is perceived among my friends as "old people's music" and therefore I am lame.

I've had the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles song stuck in my head for about a week now - thanks to whomever posted the 80's/90's child thing.

One of my coworkers burns random CDs sometimes, and she found this song called Tangerine Speedo - sometimes that pops randomly into my head.

Also love the aforementioned Tom Petty and the "Tangerine Speedo" song.  I think it was in the Charlie's Angels soundtrack

I love this song too! It's so simple and beautiful, I always feel mellow and calm when I hear it. Good choice!

When people catch these songs on one of my cds or my pod, they freak. Half of them freak because they love them, too, and the other half freak because they're crap songs (which they are). If you didn't like them in the 90s when they were on every pop station in the world, you probably won't like 'em now! I have to say, though, there's nothing that will get a party going than these ditties! They're bad but they're oh-so good.

Jellyhead - Crush (is that right?)

Rhythm is a Dancer - Snap

100% Pure Love - Crystal Waters

Another Night - Real McCoy

Rhythm of the Night - Corona

After that, any 80s country song gets me all nostalgic. Who doesn't love Islands in the Stream by Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton? I sing out loud anytime I hear it.
