Weenie dogs are awesome.  Are you getting long haired or short?  The only health problems I hear that they have are back problems because they're so long and short.  Do post pics if you get one!

Not to be a nag but PLEASE, if you get a dog (whatever kind) - please, please, please get it from a rescue (pound, shelter etc.) or a reputable breeder and NOT from a pet store or anyone shady. The cruelty that goes on behind the scenes is really awful.

I agree wholeheartedly.

Also, please don't do this to it:

Our first one had back problems. He had a little so he could get into my parents bed. I felt bad that his back hurt him, but it was cute to see him walk up his little ramp.

They are such cuties! But be prepared for the craziness!

I would never, ever, ever get one from a pet store!!! I'm either gonna do a rescue or a breeder. The only reason i'd do a breeder, is because they sometimes get rescues. i'm actually going to a breeder tomorrow to look at a dog they ahve. Apparantly when they sold her she was in perfect health, normal size and everytthing, but the owners brought her back a year later because they couldn't have her where they lived. When they brought her back her growth had been severely stunted, and they'd had her de-barked. So, I guess she's jsut an itty bitty little one who can't bark. So, she needs a home and i want a doggy, so we're gonna go take a look at her tomorrow. If we like her and if the landlords say yes, we're gonna buy her for $250 from the breeder. It's a mini long-hair breeder, but I dont' know if she's long-haired or not. We'll see...

Also, when I asked the breeder about back problems she said they tend to run in lines, and her lines don't have that problem. Obviously we'll still have to be really careful with her, but that should help.

Yay for getting a rescue Lindseyp! The dog you are talking about sounds like she needs a good home. It hurts me to hear about people mistreating doxies (or any dogs). How could anyone do that?

As for their backs, I think the biggest thing is just make sure they don't get fat. I think being heavy is the single biggest factor in their backs going out.

One more thing: doxies aren't the best at toilet training. Tinker is about 85% right now and I've heard from more experienced doxie owners that many of them are just never 100%. It is SO annoying to take her out for 10 mins, watch her run around the yard, then bring her back in and watch her pee on the floor as soon as she's in!

I was surprised to read this. I have had four weenies and they have all been good @ potty training. I can't remember any of them having an accident in the house.

When I was researching breeds online I saw this info (that they were sometimes not 100%) on a lot of breed info sites, and it is true with Tinker. My other dog - I don't think she would pee in the house if I didn't let her out for 3 days, but for some reason Tinker just gets a brain fart every few days and does it. Luckily I have stone/hardwood floors so there's no carpet to get dirty/stinky.

Love love love weenie dogs!!  They are so awesome.  They have amazing personalities and are so sweet and affectionate.  I have never had any problem house training them.  The one I have now is totally house trained but occasionally - like once very 6 months--she might have an accident.  Usually when that happens it's our fault though for not taking her out when she needed to go.  I think it's great that you are going to a rescue.  We've been trying to get another one from the Daccshund Rescue here and they are few and far between though.. Anyway, I love to talk about doxies, so if you have any specific questions let me know!
