Oh, AJ, that sucks!! Job hunting sucks. And hindsight is always 20/20.  It sucks to realize that you may have made the wrong decision. I did this last year when trying to decide between a job in retail and a job working for a bank in the marketing department (stupid me took the retail job and it ended up as a gross misrepresentation of what I originally thought it was).  Still kicking myself for this (I mean, a bank!! bank holidays, no weekends...I'm an idiot).  Anyway, your situation sucks! I don't really have any advice, but just know that others have been there, too.

Yeah, I the reason I didn't take the job at the bank was b/c I didn't really want to work at a bank (at the time). I wanted to stay in fashion or in the arts. But now, a year later, with no more progress made on my job search, I really wish I had taken the bank job. At least I would have been working in marketing for something- anything! But at least I got out of the job that I took back then as well (you may remember from FashionHag, I was working at Talbots and they grossly misrepresented the duties that I would have. They made it seem like there was much more event planning involved, but I really ended up folding shirts for nine hours a day).  I'm much better where I'm at now. At least I have responsibilities, but I still hate retail.

Hey AJ!  You know I'm in the same type of situation and it completely sucks.  I just started this new semester and have wanted to cry everyday since school started last week!! Some days I actually did cry when leaving classes.  It just seems like it never gets easier or I never get a break like so many other people do.  I mean this one guy has a job with the company I really wanted to work for last fall and he hasn't even taken the basic class that he should have taken and teaches you about how to do the position he accepted (Auditing Clients!!!) It makes me so mad!

But I'm getting over it slowly.  You will get over your situation too.  Don't feel desperate for a new job.  Usually when you feel desperate you come across that way in interviews and it can bit you in the butt.  Besides there is more than one law firm in NYC and they all probably need legal secretaries and paralegals.  There is no need to feel like that one job was the only chance you had.  Just know now that the situation in your current company isn't going to change no matter how many times they tell you that to keep you and that you are worth more in the eyes of others and someone else will see that.  You will get more interviews if you keep applying for different jobs at the different firms and I bet more than one job offer.  Heck you might even get to negotiate higher salaries with the different firms.  Just hang in there.

oh honey I'm sorry.

don't worry, something will come along.  unfortunately companies do do a lot of hiring based on connections and networking - just keep trying.

lsu is right, there are a lot of law firms in NYC.  I had some luck going to a reputable legal placement firm last summer. if i had wanted, i could have gotten a permanent position at the law firm i was temping at.  do a little research, ask around, and see if anyone can recommend a good placement firm for you.  are any of your friends in the legal world?

oh aj...i am so so so sorry.  and i say this w/ nothing but unconditional support and love--you're never going to be given that crystal ball sweetie.  at some point you're gonna have to take that leap of faith, you know?  that goes for everything, relationships, jobs, whatever.  but here's the best thing about jobs--you can always quit if you don't like it.  something else will come up, you won't starve, just don't be afraid to take a chance.

anway, what's done is done.  it's not like the legal secretary position was the only thing that will ever be offered to you.  something else wil come up, it always does.  sending good vibes and prayers your way (that goes for lsu and nyla too!)...
