My friend sent me an invite. I thought this site was mainly for dating -- I guess not? I am not really into having weirdos be able to look me up. Are there any real benefits to it other than time-wasting?

You should join! You can be my friend on friendster. I have it. It is not supposed to be a dating site. It is supposed to be a networking site. The only real benefit is sometimes someone you used to go to school with finds you.
Wow, we are so similar on the board.. I was JUST fixing to post something about friendster. I created a profile, but then realized that I had to be "invited" by someone else. I feel like a LOSE-TER.
seems everyone i know either belongs to friendster, xanga, or myspace... but no one has ever invited me. seems like something fun to do when killing time or procrastinating... anyone care to invite me? email: a.crystal@excite.com TIA

Crystal, I sent you an invite and it was sent back as undeliverable.
Friendster is the best when you first discover it, because you will find sooo many old random friends you havent talked to in years! But once you've kinda found everyone it loses its novelty!!!
i think for non-single people it's amusing to spy on friends of friends and how they painstakingly choose their favorite movies, music, etc... and when and if they change their choices when they realize they're not being quite cool enough. i do know someone who met his fiance on there, though. i call his gf "friendster." it's fun for him, i'm sure.
yeah, friendster's day has come and gone. i really don't like myspace though. loads of skanks. also, you can't see how you are connected to people, which really annoys me.
it's true that the novelty does wear off rather quickly. i still use friendster to try to look people up - like i met this guy in a bar and new he was a friend of a friend of my friend's sister so i was able to keep clicking through people until i found his profile which confirmed that just as i suspected, he was a superdork.
i actually have a few out-of-state friends that i communicate with exclusively through friendster because for whatever reason i don't have their email addresses.
