Am I over-analyzing this?
Permalink Closed

So, is it weird that I have a friend, and I stress "friend" that called me upset after reading an e-mail I sent him that jokingly inferred I might pull a Britney while I am in Vegas in February and get married.  This friend mentioned to me that he was having a great day until he read that line in my e-mail and then started pumping me for information on whether I was "in love".  We are casual friends and business associates, and he has always been flirty, but has a very serious girlfriend and I just always thought that was his personality with everyone...anyway, I just think this is a bit odd.  We don't live in the same area, but in the same call he made me promise to call him for lunch when I was in his area for business.  Should I be backing away from this... or am I making a mountain out of a molehill and getting a vibe that probably wasn't implied?

for a friend and business associate it seems he is overstepping his ground. I would probably call him if you are in town for lunch but nothing more and make sure he knows boundaries because right now he does not sound like he knows them.

I wouldn't be joking like that with a business associate...only with people I've been friends with for years or something. I don't think you're really overreacting at all. You're just being aware of your surroundings and such, which is quite frankly the smart thing to do.

I think that a lunch if you're in his neck of the woods is probably okay at this point, but like nyc_shopgirl said, make sure he knows his boundaries. If the rest of your dealings with him hasn't been full of these innuendos, this may just be an isolated incident and I think it's best to give him the benefit of the doubt this time.

If he does it again (say over the said lunch), you'll probably have to tell him that his remarks/actions are inappropiate straight out.

ok, i could TOTALLY be off so please ignore if my inference just sounds like it makes no sense... but...my first thought when i read your post was maybe this guy knows (or suspects) something bad about your bf and wants to tell you.  and if he thinks you guys are headed down the aisle whatever he knows may really be weighing heavily on him.

again, this is completely out of left field.  i wouldn't even have thought about this possibility if i hadn't just observed a similar situation (really can't get into it as it's not my story to tell, sorry!)

soo...if i were you (and since i'm the kind of person who likes stuff out on the table)...i'd have lunch w/ your friend, tell him it's really serious between you and your bf, flat out ask him if he has a problem w/ that and see what he says.

but please, if my suspicion just sounds completely unreasonable to you, don't listen to me!  just go w/ your gut, you certainly know the vibe of the situation better than i do!
