Maine?

My husband and I and possibly another couple are thinking about taking a summer vacation to Maine sometime in August or early September.      We definately want to hike some of the Appalcahain Trail, see some of the lighthouses, and eat lobster.  Anyone have any recommendations on lodging or places to see or eat?

Not Maine, per se, but if you have an extra couple of days while you're there and were interested in taking the ferry (CAT) over to Nova Scotia, I would recommend that.

I went to Portland in March. It's a great city and I'm sure it's even better in the summer when it's warm. There are a few lighthouses around the city, a state park with beaches and a good shopping scene in the Old Port district. Up the coast about 45 minutes or so is Freeport- lots of outlet shopping in small, quaint town setting. Up a little further is Boothbay Harbor, a small resort town with lots of lobster restaurants. It wasn't very busy when we were there, but I've heard it gets packed in the summer. And of course, there are lots of breweries and wineries in Maine. Most have excellent blueberry wine.

We didn't go all the way up to Bar Harbor or Nova Scotia because we were only in Portland for a five days. If you're in Maine for longer than that, definitely head north to Bar Harbor and take the ferry to Nova Scotia.

I love Maine. I wouldn't mind living in Portland if it wasn't so cold in the winter.

Maine is one of my favorite places to go on vacation. I go camping there, so I can't recommend a place to stay. Bar Harbor has it all- hiking, lighthouses, great bars, and restaurants. It's also close to other nearby beautiful places, so I highly recommend it.
I highly recommend going early August, the weather is outstanding.
