I recycle and try to not waste resources, but isn't this taking it a bit too far?

You should rinse your pads in cold water before machine or HAND washing; ah yes, harken back to yesteryear...

And good news, ladies, with proper care these pads can last you 3 - 5 years!

OMG I am dying here. That is the grossest concept/product I have ever seen besides the pubic hair wigs. Somethings just should be thrown away and not recycled.

It is called a Merkin.  I have no earthly idea why anyone would want a wig there!  I mean, don't people spend tons of money/time trying to get rid of that?

I wouldn't use this, but for whatever reason I dont think its that gross.  I don't know why, to each their own.

That is pretty nasty.  Hand wash them! I think not.

This thread makes me smile. As some of you know, I live in hippieville. I have a not insignificant number of girlfriends who think I'm the devil for *not* using these (or that weird internal plastic cap thingie). My reason is convenience - I just don't want to be bothered, but the idea of it doesn't really disgust me, I can deal with my own body pretty easily.

RyanJ - I am not too sure what it is but a couple of friends use it - I think it is a soft, flexible plastic cup (small) thing that is worn internally. It seems to me like it would be a huge pain in the ass but as I said, a lot of my friends are earth-mother/hippie types who would never consider using the chemically-contaminated products of the 'evil' feminine hygeine industry!

Yes, they are called 'Inseads'.  A roommate of mine bought them once and we both tried them.  Never again!!  It is, however, an interesting concept.

so weird, a bunch of the girls on this other board i belong to were just talking about where to buy the cap things (the instead softcup). there's also something called the diva cup. anyway this other board is chock full o'vegans so i guess that explains why they are all into the cap. personally that thing weirds me out and i'd be too big a spazz to work it. also, i think the softcup is one-time use which seems even more wasteful than tampons (although there are other reasons for using the cap). but the diva cup and other similar products are re-usable.

the washable pad doesn't really gross me out that much. i mean the idea of any pad gives me the willies but i don't think having to wash one out seems that gross. my family used to buy a lot of stuff from this environmentally conscious catalog and they had washable pads and reusable diapers and stuff so i'm probably just used to the idea.
