I have recently started going to the gym again. I find when I get home from the gym, I want to pig out. I want to eat more food and junkier food than I did when I didn't work out. I keep craving ice cream and I pretty much never eat ice cream. It's like it makes going to the gym not worth it because I overcompensate by eating tons of junk.
Am I crazy? Does this happen to anyone else? How do I stop this? I tried eating an apple today to satisfy my hunger, but my body just wanted ice cream.
I am either one extreme or the other. Some days I will have run and just feel really great, so I don't want to eat junk food. I will drink all water and eat lots of fruits and veggies. Other days I will find myself coming home and pigging out junk. Pop, cheez its, cheese filled pretzel sticks ( MY FAVE!). I am not sure what my deal is, but I am never a happy medium

That happens to me too after I finish walking the neighborhood. I'll get snacky. How about picking up some low fat or fat free ice cream and eating a scoop of it. Usually you crave foods that have certain vitamins in them that you are deficient in.
Are you eating enough? Before I go to the gym I always have a snack. Yogurt w/ special K mixed in, 1/2 protein bar, protein shake, pasta salad or small piece of chicken are some healthy ideas. Are you drinking enough milk through out the day? Maybe a glass of skim milk in the morn or w/ cereal will prevent cravings later on?
And as soon as I get home I eat my dinner (I work out after work), chicken w/ spinach and some rice, or some variation of this.
Just some tips that work for me...most of the time at least...except for that mini milky way bar that was calling my name after the gym last thursday ;)
You know those klondike slim a bear line is really good and pretty healthy. I get the ice cream sandwiches for a dessert at the end of my day. They are I think around 120 calories so it wouldn't be bad if you were craving ice cream. It wouldn't wreck your diet.
i think this happens b/c your blood sugar is low --your body depleted it's carb supply during your workout which makes you crave sugar/carbs.
i try to bring something healthy to eat on the way home from the gym (preferably something that has some protein and good fat like almonds or cheese) and it usually keeps me from eating everything in the house when i get home.
i also try to have dinner as soon as i can after i get home. or i have a glass of wine, which really works well.
Thanks girls! From reading your posts, I can see the mistake I am making. I always make a point of eating dinner BEFORE going to the gym. I thought that was what I was supposed to do. I should probably go to the gym directly from work instead of going home to eat. And before that, I should just have a small snack.
You can also try having a protein shake or any kind of fruit smoothie after your workout. My trainer always told me to do that because the protein helps rebuild your muscles after the workout. Or if you eat a few small meals a day, the smoothie can count as one and you wont be craving so much food after a workout.
I thought of you today b/c when I got home from the gym I felt the same way. I ate dinner but still wanted something sweet. I'm all out of low fat treats so I'm not very happy at the moment.
I spoke with my trainer regarding this issue last night. This pertains to specifically weight lifting; I don't know about just cardio. Anyway, she said that it is really important to eat right after a workout. A lot of body builders will tell you to just eat protein (like turkey or something) after a workout, but my trainer said that you also need carbs right after a workout. She said probably the perfect thing to eat would be a low-fat/no-fat yogart, because it is high in protein and sugar. She said the sugar will go directly to your muscles immediately after a workout as opposed to being stored as fat, so it will help build muscle. She did say you don't want to combine the fat, only the protein and sugar. She said turkey and an orange would be a good choice too.

Maybe the yogurt would satisfy the ice cream craving, too, since it is made of similar ingredients (somewhat). I will have to try that. I like yogurt. I kind of forgot about it though.
