Boy, is she getting raked over the coals for this.  It's everywhere.  I don't like her music, don't know much about her, but the media is taking this way too far.  It's really not that big of a deal.  I saw the show.  She was bad, but I've heard worse.  Somebody else needs to f*** up so she can get a little peace.

please, please, don't get your music news from MSNBC. but dude, cricket, you're right--she didn't sound good live (SOO punk of her, you could say) (cue winky face... oh wait here: ) but apparently kelly clarkson's orange bowl performance was way worse--the mic didn't work at first, her backing track was off--people are just jumping on the anti-ashlee bandwagon with such misguided glee. get off it, folks. mr. MSNBC music writer knows nothing about her.

ouchhhh. I'm no Ashlee fan (obviously) but it has to hurt to read this:

quote:

What I hope and pray for now is that Ashlee will go away and leave the public alone. On behalf of the world community, I implore her to pursue another career. There are many avenues for a young woman of her abilities. Pig farmers need wranglers. The U.S. Forest Service has many outposts in remote areas of our nation’s parks, where one can make all the noise one wants and not be heard by another soul for miles. And if she’s determined to remain in the entertainment field, the horror genre in Hollywood could always use a good screamer.

This has been covered in 3 pages of this forum. The girl is pitiful and I say this as a 42 yr old women who was into the punk scene in the late 70's and early 80's.

I hung out in NYC at CBGB's, The Limelight, The Palladium and The Cat Club as well as a club in Trenton that I bartended at in the late 70's into the 80's; City Gardens in Trenton, NJ.

I have seen punk bands; The Buzzcocks, The Ramones, The Dead Kennedy's, The Circle Jerks, Suicidal Tendencies, Siouxie and The Banshees, Talking Heads, The Clash, Ultra Vox, New Order and stop me........PLEASE!

Wearing Hot Topics clothing does not make one a punk as Bumblebee and RynaJ and CC pointed out. It's a state of mind based on rebellion, politics and general anything anti-establishment. If I could some it up easily I would.  To this day if asked what I am and what I listen to, it would be a punk.

She's a POSER, a fashion statement with no talent and a poor, little rich girl riding on her sister's skirt tales. She may sound great on CD, but hell Sid Viscious did too and that man could not sing.

Yes the Sex Pistols were a put together punk band, but unlike Ashlee's band, the Sex Pistol's had balls and the constition to stand the test of punk time, she is but a foot note in those that can't sing and is nothing more then a wannabe.

Ok, I could be totally wrong about this, but here's my opinion of Ashlee.  She never presented herself as punk like Avril has.  I feel like Ashlee understands more that she is pop, just a different type of pop than Jessica is.  Maybe I'm way off, but that's just the impression I've gotten from her and why she doesn't bother me.  I actually like her, her songs are entertaining and good for what she is.

ETA: I don't think we need to argue whether or not Ashlee is punk, it is abundantly clear she is not.

I agree with you, Ally S, that she is not punk.  I guess she just doesn't bother me as much as she does some people.  I'm not worried about what she does.  Just not that big a deal.  I'm just surprised at all the uproar about a teenager and her little songs.

ally s, i'm so jealous that you saw the ramones, new order, the buzzcoks, etc... that is so cool!!

but... (you knew there was a but coming) if sid vicious sounded great on CD, but terrible live, how exactly is that different from ashlee?

if you define punk as not just about rebellion (ashlee=rebelling from her sister, her family, the perfectly in-tune pop star), not just about anti-establishment (ashlee=hated by EVERY media outlet, hated by almost everyone on this forum (a pretty good cross-section of the population), hated by ex-punks, yet still performing and selling albums), but about politics, then how do ALL the bands you listed fit into the construct of being political? as many punk bands were political as other acts are (think eminem, the roots, the dixie chicks, bruce springsteen, paul simon, public enemy), so it's not an idea particular to punk.

how exactly is ashlee a poser? because she dresses like someone who shops at hot topic? just because shopping at hot topic doesn't MAKE you a punk doesn't mean that shopping at hot topic EXCLUDES you from being a punk.

Mizzle, PM we if you want to take this further...

BUT...yep there's always a but Ashlee's rebellion seems a media imposed rebellion. Have we ever heard her true thoughts, political views and where she exactly stands on anything other then her apology for f'ing up on SNL?

So she shops in Hot Topics, my daughter buys her obnoxious t-shirts from Hot Topics and honestly, I'd rather walk in there and here the Anti-Flag or Modest Mouse then walk into Express and buy my Editor pants and here GOD knows who! I do not even identify with music today unless it's Franz Ferdinand or Modest Mouse, etc.

Sorry but she is media generated without a purpose.

On the other hand how do you feel about Paul Shelley solo,UltraVox, Echo and The Bunnyman, The Damned and as I said I could go on...

you mean pete shelley? his single is good, but the album is a little dull. as far as the damned, new rose is a classic, and love song is a stone cold killer. but then they became a goofy goth band and i can't do that (and i have a high goth tolerance). ian mccolloch has good hair but i find the bunnymen kind of dull.

i've heard as many of ashlee's "true thoughts" as you have, but i'm giving her the benefit of the doubt. i'm going to research into it more. but i have seen her whole tv series, a making of the video, all her videos, all her on-tv performances, and listened to her album, and i say she is PUNK MUTHAFCKAZ!

This could get very meta if we let it...

I don't know my sh** as well as - well, Mizzle, so I am not going to comment beyond saying that a)punk is, to me, basically an attitude and a mindset, not a style. So ultimately what you wear doesn't make you a punk. But, it also doesn't exclude you from being a punk. It *can* be part of it, tho'. Oh, this is hard.

One thing I will say is: the media, and the audience at the halftime show, piling on Ashlee - they suck. There's something particularly gross about a bunch of sheep (because now it's suddenly OK to hate Ashlee, so all the journo hacks and drunken football fans are on that bandwagon right quick) booing someone for being ...a sheep. Because - why? The media said it was OK!

I just feel sorry for this girl. She's 18. And she keeps getting back up. I can admire that.

another topic: if ashlee were a guy, would she be getting so much crap? if bono had sang out of key, would this even be a topic of conversation?

No, but Bono has a solid reputation and has had a long career.  Now if such an incident ocurred with, lets just say, Arron Carter, I think the reaction would be similar.

a crime is a crime, no matter who the criminal. you can't say that ashlee singing off key makes her pitiful, but bono singing off key is excusable because he is old.

hehe...it is not about him being old.  people know that he has talent.  If he gave a bad performance, people would give him the benifit of the doubt b/c of his good reputation.  Ashlee is new to the music scene and is already on shakey ground b/c of the SNL performance.

i still don't think that means she should be booed by 70,000 football fans who had JUST SEEN kelly clarkson give an abysmal performance where her mic was off and her backing track was totally off. actually, maybe it's just that the orange bowl should have known better than to book a halftime show featuring ashlee simpson and kelly clarkson.

Oh, I completely agree with you about the booing!  That was very cruel, no matter how her performance was.

Poor girl.  I think she tries to hard and that is why she ends up in this kind of mess.

Simply put, Ashlee Simspon is a horrific singer. She does not have the voice for it. To me ishe is just following her sister and trying to be famous but she does not have the talent. Ashlee should not be a singer. She needs to get her own life and stop trying to be Jessica.

someone mentioned this, but i think most of the fault lies with the talent bookers for the orange bowl halftime show.  how could they possibly be MORE out of touch with their demographic than to hire ashlee simpson (and kelly clarkson, for that matter)? seriously, i cannot think of a worse choice.  if they had to have top 40 pop, how about beyonce and destiny's child? the drunken frat boys could have gotten into that, just for the sex appeal if nothing else (and also, they are actually talented).

rowdy fans at a college football game want some beasties or green day or something loud and rockin'.  ashlee simpson? bad, bad decision--it's like they were asking for it.
