Do you want to see a musical or a play?

If price is a concern, there are always half-price tickets that are available the day of the show that you can get. That is a fun, slightly unpredictable option if you want to see a longer running musical but risky if you want to see something that is newer.

When I went, we saw three shows, and they were all good. I've seen lots of musicals that have toured to my town, and honestly, the best one I've ever seen was in New York, and it was Wicked. SO amazing. So if I could pick one show to see, it would definitely be that one.

But, like I said, they were all good.

I love Wicked, but saw it on tour. I am coming to NYC for the first time this month also. Does anyone know the name of the place that sells cheaper tickets or are there several? Also how dressy do people get for the shows there? Would a nice black dress and cute shoes be good?

I think it's called Tix on the Square. I don't know if there are more than one though. And in my experience, if you wear a dress you're fine. I think I mostly wore a summer skirt and top, so pretty casual.

Another musical I loved was Avenue Q (it's been out for a while now).

The discount ticket booths I go to are TKTS. There are two TKTS locations.

I find that anything goes in terms of what to wear, but the outfit you mention sounds like it would be good.

how risky is it to buy from TKTS?  i really want to see those 2 shows now, but i want to be sure that i get tickets.

i'm glad to hear such great reviews about the shows!!  i'm getting excited!

You never know for sure what they're going to have at tkts or where your seats will be.  I think you're safe with the long running shows as they tend to not sell out as much.  You can go to the location in Southstreet seaport as well sometimes the line is not as bad and they open early.

Ave Q is great and I really loved Spring Awakening.

ditto to what halah said.  i went by myself with no expectations on like a wednesday night or thursday night.  i did notice that people that had certain shows in mind or wanted 2 seats or more sometimes had to be broken up, etc. in order to get the show they wanted.  i'm sure if you arrive early, your chances are better but if you want to be certain to get what you want you probably should just pre-book.

I just saw Avenue Q on Saturday - It was awesome! My friend and I put our names in for the lottery, but we didn't get the lottery tickets - but they were offering seats for only $31 for the same show that we were able to buy, and we had amazing seats.

I don't think you can really go wrong with any of the shows.
