Hey girls! I know there were lots of posts on FH re laptops, which ones are better, etc. I had planned on printing them out but waited too long and now I can't get them. In any event, I hope you guys can help my hubby and I pick out a good one. I really value your advice b/c I have no idea where to begin doing research. We want one that is a great computer for the money (i.e. not overpriced, etc.)
Right now--we think we would like to get either an Apple or a microsoft compatible laptop (hope that makes sense). Which is better? What do you have and are you pleased with it? I would love any advice you girls can give--thanks!!
I have a DellTM Inspiron 9200. I love it. I have used both Apple and PC, but I like PC better. I have had an Apple and I worked on a newspaper and that is what we used. I found that with PC there is just more programs with them. I just wish PC made cuter computers. Apples are so cool looking and for the most part PC are pretty boring.
My brother does computer stuff for a living so he is the one I go to with all my computer questions. He said for the most part any major retailers like - Dell, Gateway or Apple are probably not going to screw you. He said to stay away from Best Buy or Circuit City to buy computers. He also said you should stay away from Centrio processor. Celeron or Pentium processors are the best.
Look around online for coupon codes for computers. Dell was having a deal earlier that gave you $750.00 a computer of $1500.00, so look around and maybe you can find something great.

I would not recommend getting a laptop at Best Buy/Circuit City. My parents did that for both my brother and I and we actually had to use the extra warranties that we paid extra for because both of our computers were breaking down like mad. My brother has a Compaq and I have an HP so I wouldn't recommen either of those brands as well (although they're the same company so I guess it's a sort of moot point).
Maybe a more Apple-literate person can elbaorate, but my understanding is that since Apple controls such a small market share (something like 2-5%), there are no viruses for Mac, which in this age of increased spyware and other lovely crap is a definte upside to getting a Mac. Viruses are mainly aimed to highlight the (numerous) weaknesses in the Windows OS and because most hackers hate Bill Gates.
I have used PCs for most of my life, but I am switching to Macs once I have the money. I am planning on being in an creative industry where Macs are defintely prevalent. Plus, everyone who has a Mac seems to love their Mac. Who ever says "I love Windows!" ?
I'm not quite sure about the stats on the market share thing, but I have definitely heard of the "no virus" thing for Macs. Of course, since I have one, I know they don't have them because in my 8-10 years being around a Macs, I've never come across one on them.
LOL Lilykind, I hate Windows (which I use at work), so that comment made me laugh
Thanks for your responses, girls! All of you offered very useful info and I appreciate that and will definitely show it to my hubby. We've decided to get a Dell. Actually, after I posted this thread my hubby did some research and we went to the Apple store. We (well really he) finally decided to go with the exact model that Ryan has! Then we checked the forum and saw your post, Ryan, so we went ahead and ordered it! Your post totally confirmed it for us, so thanks! We weren't able to find any Dell coupons but I am going to look online today (don't really trust my hubby's searching skills). BTW, do you recall where you found the $750 off coupon? That sounds like a great deal! Thanks again everyone.
