computer experts - HELP!
Permalink Closed

So, for the past week or so, when I am on the internet, I am constantly getting page errors (meaning, I click on a clearly valid link and I get the "item not found" page). Sometimes I have to refresh 2-3 times before it will take me to the page.

My teenage cousins were staying at my house while I was on vacation, and downloaded a bunch of crap (AIM, MSN messenger, etc.). I have run Spybot and Adaware, as well as a Virus Scan (twice) and defragmented the hard drive. It's slightly better, but still not like it was before. Any ideas? I have a Dell Dimension 8250 and Cox High Speed Internet. Thanks.

Did you try going into Internet options and deleting cookies and temporary internet files and clearing the history?  That works for me sometimes when my computer is acting funny.

definetly get rid of the cookies and temp files.  You might also want to delete some of the programs and crap they downloaded.  The only other option would be to reformat the computer but that would erase everything and you might not want to do that.  I know this sucks.  I've done it to myself way too much and have had to completely erase and start over multiple times.  On the other hand if you have been wanting to reformat now is the perfect time.

Oh I know it sucks but just think if you go through all of the saving and reformatting it will be like having a brand new computer again and you can put back on only the stuff you want.  Stay Positive!

Why don't you try uninstalling and reinstalling your browser first and see if that works?

Try a different browser, perhaps and see if the problem persists.
I'd try to localize the problem before taking extreme mesaures like reformatting your HD.

soundmind -- sorry, dumb question. But if Internet Explorer came already installed on my computer, how would I reinstall it? Do I have a disk somewhere with all my manuals?

check out the microsoft homepage for the latest version and download it.  Then unistall the one you have and reinstall the newest version.  It should be free either at microsoft.com or www.download.com

carmenb- I am pretty sure that one is a virus. I got that too, but it disappeared after I ran a virus and spy cleaner.
