What should I do?

So I was interviewing for this incredible job about a month ago. I was asked back three times but then they kept telling me that they could not make a decision. After about three weeks of this, I gave up and assumed that they were just giving me the brush-off.

Well, they called this morning and finally offered me the position. However, they completely low-balled the offer. They offered about $6,000 less than what I am currently making. This annoys me because they totally knew how much I am making now.. Why would I leave by current job for that much less?

I want to counteroffer for about 3,000 more and tell them that I am willing to compromise. What do you think?

I do really want it and I think there is more room for growth there than my current company. The new job would also cut about 35 minutes off my commute. But I am getting married in 4 months and really need the extra cash that my current hell-hole offers. (The environment sucks here and the people are complete jerks (for the most part))

What should I do? Thanks girls!

i would try to negotiate just as you said you would (tell them that you are willing to compromise). i think that it's a fair deal especially b/c it's a 50/50 compromise.

good luck!

I agree, try meeting in the middle and see what happens. Good luck! Keep us posted.

Well, I'd kindly and professionally explain to them what you told us. That at this point in time it's difficult to take a pay cut and that you'd love to take the position - show your enthusiasm in the job well.  But I'd ask them to match your current salary.
They will most likely not budge but they will then meet you in the middle.  I'm afraid if you offer to meet them in the middle off the bat they'll lowball you again.   From knowing a couple hiring managers and personal experience I know they often low-ball well expecting you to come back asking for more.  One round of pay negotiations before you get hired is normal for most positions.

I agree with Vanessa - show your enthusiasm and explain as you did to us that you just aren't in a position right now to be able to take a pay cut.  Make sure, however, that you make it clear that you are negotiating with them, not completely denying their offer - "I'd like to negotiate if at all possible" or "hopefully we can negotiate a compromise that fits both our needs" or something to that effect.

So.. my parents and my fiance kept telling me all day to sleep on it and call them in the morning to try to negotiate.. but I may be the most impatient person in the world so I decided that I had to call them back today!

I did and explained the situation.. in the end asking for a 4,000 increase.. They said they would get back to me...

Within 15 minutes they called back and said that they could give me $3,000 more, which was what I was expecting anyway. So I accepted!!

Thanks for all of your advice girls! I hope that my new job will not keep me off of stylethread during the day.. I don't know what I'll do if that happens! :)
