Question about dying my hair...
Permalink Closed

I've been contemplating dying my dark brunette hair blonde for a while. Obviously I would get advice and input from my stylist, but I was wondering if anyone else has dyed their hair a drastic color from what they were before. I tried the clairol.com download thing and I think I look pretty cute as a blonde.

Any advice, warnings, regrets? My biggest fear is that the bleach would cause my hair to break or all fall out. I'm also prepared for it to be really high maintenance.

I was a blonde for years and recently went back to my natural dark brown.. I am an absolute freak about roots. I hate them.. therefore I was going to the salon every 4 weeks just to get rid of them. It really did a number on my hair.. The more drastic the change, the more upkeep.

Also, if you are going to do it in the summer months, be careful.. its hard to swim or sun-bathe with hair that is so processed.. (it will constantly change colors)

I have naturally dark blonde hair and I often highlight or dye it blonder in the summer. I do have a couple of friends with very dark brown hair who have been blonde at times, and my advice would be, basically, that it IS possible to go very blonde from dark brown if you do the following:

1)get it done by a professional

2)upkeep is expensive and needs to be done frequently

3)make sure you match the shade to your skin tone - very light blonde can look freaky and unnatural on a non-natural blonde if you get the wrong tone.

It expensive and time-consuming but if you can afford it in terms of $ and time, it is totally doable.

I have really light blonde hair and I dye mine dark brown- sometimes I do it myself and sometimes I go to the salon. I usually get antsy and can't wait for my appointment and I end up doing it myself. I would try doing it yourself and if you don't like it then, go to the salon. I once dyed my hair three times in one week and it was fine. It was a little dry, so I used this Aveeda deep conditioner a few times that week and my hair was fine. I do so much to my hair and it has never fallen out, broke off or anything horrible. The worst that has happend it that is has been a little dry, but that can be fixed. It is hair and it can always be fixed. I would give it a try. It is nice to be able to do it yourself. I would go to a wholesale beauty supply store- I go to Sally's and talked to some of the people who work there and they can usually help you pick out the right type of color and supplies you need. Good luck and let us know how it turns out!

go to a good professional who won't burn your hair off and you will be fine.  If this is the first time you've dyed your hair (or the first time in a long while) make sure to use a deep conditioner at least once a week on it.  Otherwise you should just follow the same routine as before.

I don't dye all of my hair. I do heavy highlights and it gives the same effect as dying all of my hair but cuts down on the damage and time between retouches.  You might want to consider that too.

I think that my natural hair color is dark brown. I have been hi-lighting my hair for 14 years. When I was 14 I used sun in and turned my hair orange, that was when my dark blonde hair was turning brown. Well then my mom took me to her colorist and I have been hi-lighting it since. I go every 4-6 weeks and my hair is the exact same as it was before. I would stay away from bleaching your hair, that is what could really damage it. I have actually been thinking of dying mine dark brown, funny! I would go to a good salon, not just a fancy one, like Van Michaels, b/c sometimes they can suck. Make sure that someone you know has gone there for a while and then I think you will be just fine. I personally love being blonde and that is why I pay so much once a month for it... E-mail me if you want any salon suggestions!
