The Pregnant Man Grows Ever Larger in Buzz

Thomas Beatie (CNN/Harpo)

by Molly McCall

Yesterday Thu, 03 Apr 2008 13:30:51 PDT

On Thursday, Oprah introduced Oregon resident Thomas Beatie to anyone who hadn't yet heard of him. Beatie, a transgender man who is legally male, is six months pregnant with his and his wife's child. La Winfrey called the expectant situation "a new definition of what diversity means for everybody."

And everybody, it seems, is interested. Over the past seven days, searches for "pregnant man" rose 26,879%. Demand for "thomas beatie" grew more than 3,000%. Interest in "oregon man pregnant" has swelled 461%.

As for the skeptics who typed "man claims he is pregnant" and "pregnant man?" into Search, we can answer: Mr. Beatie retained his female reproductive organs. Because he has a uterus, he can get pregnant and carry a baby to term.

In Buzz, some of the most popular articles from the past week focused on the bun in Beatie's oven. As we posted earlier, Boing Boing and Huffington Post were two of the first sources to surface with articles on the story. Since then, the Huffington Post scored another hit with an item revealing more photos of the fertile daddy.

LilSugar, Yahoo! News, and People.com have also polled well with Buzz readers. The People.com article, which offers an exclusive video clip from the Oprah appearance, was one of the most voted-on articles in Buzz after the show aired.

So has this childbearing event really redefined what diversity means for everybody? The tale certainly seems to have people thinking about gender issues. We've noted a surge in queries for "transgendered" and "transgender pregnancy." Lookups for "pregnant man" have flowed in from every state in the U.S. and every age group.

With the fruitful papa about to enter his third trimester, we may have three more months of this baby buzz. Enjoy it!

We've been talking about this just about every day at work. He was on Oprah yesterday. My mom taped it for me, but I haven't been able to watch it yet. It's an interesting topic and interesting how people react to it. I'll probably have more of an opinion to talk about once I watch the Oprah episode. All I know now is that first article I read.

they seem very happy, and that's awesome, but i feel like the articles/interviews/media take on this is very misleading. he is a man that was born female, with female reproductive organs -- so of course he can get pregnant! it doesn't mean any other man on the block (without female repro organs) can get pregnant.

I saw this on Oprah... I have mixed feeling too, and in general its just hard to wrap my head around it. I do say good for them, and they seem very happy. I do wonder about the psychological effects that it may have on the child, but on the other hand, I have no problem with same sex couple adopting so I don't see how its really *that* different with the exception of the fact that they poor kid is going to have the identity of "the kid that a man gave birth to" from the time its born...

but I guess in general my fellings are wow, good for them, I hope everything works out well!

and this may be a dumb question, but if he was born a woman, still had female repro organs, and isn't taking the drugs... wouldn't he currently be a woman for all intents and purposes? What is it that makes him a man in the eyes of the law? I mean, he was able to legally marry and whatnot... it just seems weird that this can happen, yet same sex couples can't marry (or get civil unions in most states) I guess I don't really see the difference?

I Love Choo - They live in Oregon and same sex marriages are legal there. The article above does, however, say "legally male" and I am curious to know what these alleged legal definitions are.

I watched the Oprah and was actually pretty annoyed that it has been made out to be such a big deal. I, personally, don't think it is. He was born a woman and kept his reproductive organs when he decided to become a man. It isn't like this is a huge miracle of science or anything.

I just hope this whole media circus isn't too harmful to the kid.

this worries me, and also the fact that he's been taking testosterone throughout the pregnancy, which i can't imagine is good for a developing fetus.

I have to say, I have wondered before why this hadn't happened before, with so many sex changes having happened in the past few decades, why is this the first pregnant man we've heard of?  I am only guessing here, but is it because the medical community has strongly encouraged the women to have the reproductive organs removed before becoming men?

Also, I can't wrap my head around how this conception occurred.

I am interested to see how things turn out after the birth though, when that flood of attachment hormones comes through for Thomas...will he reconsider his masculinity?

As a whole though, I think the entire situation as we know it so far is totally fine with me morally.  I applaud the courage to come out publicly.

Well, apparently they had a hell of a time getting a doctor to agree to artificially inseminate him, so maybe that's why this hasn't happened before?

Well, uh, techinically every woman's clitoris is a mini-penis if you really think about it. Both are the same type of tissue, both engorge with with blood when certain signals are sent. It's just that one is much smaller than the other, but both are actually much larger than what is visible from the outside. There is usually some amount of tissue (in a f to m transiition) that is able to be "pulled" out of the body and enlongated. I'm going to take a wild stab (no pun intended) in the dark here and assume that with the extra testosterone the clitoris was uh, more active than normally. biggrin

I was just about to say this! I'm really low-brow and am constantly making jokes about a penis being an extended clitoris. I'm 12.

There are some pics floating around of Chyna - is that her name? the chick on Celebrity Rehab? - and she has an extended clitoris. Not that she's come out and said it but I think there might be some hormone issues with her as well.

I don't know all the details about legally changing your sex but I've been told it involves a visit before a judge, kind of like legally changing your name but more formal. I wouldn't swear to this though. One of my ex-bfs (who now lives as a woman but with his boy parts, at least last I heard) went through the process and I can only vaguely remember the details.

The only thing I wish is that the media would quit freaking out about it. I've seen much manlier women than this guy and I'm sure no one would give them sh*t for having kids, although I'll admit the belly hair is interesting.
