We have DirecTV with Tivo at home - it's awesome! You have to sign up with DirecTV and buy the Tivo box from them. It's actually really cheap if you already have or plan to sign up for DirecTV - I'm pretty sure we only pay $5 a month for the Tivo (if you just have regular cable and a standard Tivo, you pay $12/month for Tivo). You also have to buy the DirecTV Tivo box, which I think was about $100 - but even a regular Tivo box costs at least that or more.
I found this page on DirecTV's website that looks fairly helpful:
I just called them and set it up -- they have the Tivo boxes on sale for $49, so I got theirs. They scheduled our appt for the Monday after Xmas, so that was great. Only problem is they can't mail the receiver (installation guy has to bring it with him) so I have nothing to wrap any ideas?
I am so scared my husband will find out. The Directv guy said the charges would be on our next bill, which will get here next week when we're out of town. I am scared I will forget to come home and hide it!

Since you want something to wrap and you wont have the actual tivo, I would put a picute of the tivo in a tiny box, and wrap it and put it in his stocking. This way he will still have something to unwrap, and he wont suspect it b/c it will be in such a tiny box. Plus you can write when it will be delivered. Maybe even include a Spread Sheet in which he can write all of the shows that he would like to tivo, and then you can program it for him. I know its lame but that is all I can think of.
