when do you retire shoes?

I've had a pair of black stuart weitzman peep toe heels for about 4 years.  I've worn them quite a bit so I've taken them in to get the plastic heel thing replaced a few times (and I need to take them in again).  Now, the inside sole is starting to get loose.  At what point to you say enough and toss the shoes?  they are a pretty classic style and are in decent condition everywhere else.  What do you do with your shoes?  Repair them?  Or wear into the ground and then toss?

If they're still comfortable and the repair/replacement maintains a neat appearance, then you probably can get a little more time out of them.  Maybe it would help to get an objective friend to look at them when you're wearing them and tell you if they still look ok.  I know that it can be difficult to recognize when it's time to toss.

When they're worn into the ground. :) I've had some of my shoes for nearly ten years now. But I'm careful about where I wear them (and when - there are "good weather" shoes and "rainy day" shoes). And I take them to the best shoe repair in town, when they need a little help. So they tend to last me a long, long time before having to be retired.

I don't worry about whether or not something will be in style or not - but then, I don't buy overly trendy styles anyway. I think most shoes (pointy toe, round toe / mary jane, platform) are always in style, whether or not they're having an "in" moment.

Same here.  If they're not repairable such as replacing the heel cap, re-gluing or re-sewing, etc., I throw them out.  This is the case with most of the shoes though, I wear them so much that they rip, tear, and scuff real bad.  My feet are really destructiveashamed.

When I get tired of them. I know that's not very "green" of me (at least I give them to Goodwill).

But some I have never grown tired of, so I keep on resoling/reheeling. As long as the uppers are in good shape and I like them, I see no reason to toss them.

Oh gosh, when I love a pair, I will do anything to save them - have the heels redone, resole them, get new inserts, fix scuffs, etc...

Although I will say that once they start looking sad (visible scuffs that can't be fixed, dirty), I toss them.  Also, I usually wear my shoes sans socks, so lots of times I have to pitch them because they get stinky ashamed
