My dorm room smells horrible!
Permalink Closed

My dorm room smells so bad.  It's because there are fourof us in this realy small space and we can't ventilate by opening windows cause it's too cold, and the hallway smells like old beer so opening that door doesn't help.  Any suggestions for room sprays or good candles or anything?  I think those plug in things are gross usually.

I really hate those chemical smelly plug-ins too.  Maybe try Frebreeze and a bunch of scented candles?

The same thing happened to me my sophomore year. I was in a triple and after one of my roomies threw up after getting wasted, it didn't smell so hot. IMO the only thing that really works is Lysol and the stuff that they have now that's supposed to get odors out of air.

You should douse the room in Lysol and all right before you leave for the holidays. Provided everyone has cleaned the room (like not leaving spoiled food there...same roomie who threw up did this too over spring break and I ended up coming back to stink and having to wash green bacteria out of the fridge....), it should smell all right when you come back.

Okay...a few suggestions:
~scented candles are a go...so long as you test them out first...some smell lovely in the store and horrid when burning.
~try Pier One for some less expensive but wonderfully scented ones
~Pier One also has some linen and room sprays...I've had luck with these. Also, check out Caldrea's room sprays...dleish!
~If you have carpeted floors you could give them a steam clean, let them dry, follow with that powder that you vacuum up.
~Potpouri in a bowl, or scented chips....maybe even cedar chips in the closet....or scent sachets in the drawer.
~Coffee beans in a bowl with a candle on top makes for a strange zen like, faux rock garden
Hope one of these helps.

I have an Aveda oil diffuser and I really like it. It would probably work well in a dorm room.

You could try incense too. It's usually more potent than scented candles.

Try the bath and body works room sprays along with lysol and a fan.  I think lysol and a fan is your only real hope here.  sorry you have crummy roommates/dormmates.  I know the feeling.

my mom has used this stuff for years, it isn't like those Glade sprays as it takes the smell away and doesn't add a masking scent (which sometimes can only make things worse).  i'm not sure where she buys it, prob Wal-Mart.

Ozium Air Sanitizer Spray

i was also going to say to use a air santizer--i always see commercials for oust -- they say that it's better than lysol b/c it cleans the air.. it's worth a try.

I have a few friends that have used the Glade Wisp Air Freshener. It puffs out a smokey cloud (which is the scent) and you can smell the stuff when you walk in the room. It requires a battery though, but its pretty cool.

Maybe not just for the smell but a plant helps get oxygen in the room and will make things seem...just better.  I HATED living in that shoebox but having candles, plants, room spray, and a fan all really did help.

not sure if this works, but i read it on a site that someone posted on FH. it said to put dryer sheets (e.g. Bounce) in your hamper, closet, shoes, basically anywhere the nasty smell is generating. it's supposed to deodorize the stench.

air purifiers do work, you don't need an expensive one.  citrus rinds in the garbage disposal is another suggestion.  also, what about coal?  I think the recent Lucky issue with Alicia Silverstone said that coal is a natural air purifier.

plain coffee grounds work.  pour into a bowl & place near the offensive area.  let sit overnight or a few days.  the grounds will help absorb the odor & should eliminate the stench.  best to use several bowls, strategically placed throughout the room(s).  this way, it rids the smell faster.

My grandma's remedy! It really works. She uses this idea for the kitchen trash.

Also I spray febreeze on everything! I love it. I think it freshens a room, and not in an overpowering way.  I usually get the allergen Febreeze. It's got a yellow nozzle.
