itunes/podcast question

I feel like I am stupid, but I can't figure this out! I currently have 76 podcasts saved in my iTunes. I told iTunes to automatically delete them after I've listened to them, and I probably only have about 20 left to listen to (so I should only have 20 saved in my iTunes). But it only automatically deletes some of them. For example:

as you can see, I have listened to Grammar Girl's episode 93, 91, and 90 (which I know because I heard them, but you can tell because there isn't the blue ball next to it). But for some reason, they're still there (yes, I have synced my ipod quite a few times since I listened to them). It automatically deleted episode 92 after I listened to it, like it's supposed to (and I have no idea why it's not showing up the list greyed-out, either). I right-clicked on these episodes to make sure that the auto-delete setting was set for them, and it was, and I even re-applied it to several of them just to be doubly sure. But it still refuses to delete these, even though it realizes that I've listened to them. I've tried just leaving it go, figuring that it would remember to delete them after a while, but I have like the last month's worth of podcasts on here and they show no signs of leaving.

Does anyone know what's going on?

Stupid Question #2 - what are the checkboxes for? I've tried leaving them checked and unchecked and I can't figure out any difference no matter what I do.

Could it be that it only deletes them if you listen to the whole podcast, and those you stopped before it completed?  I've just been manually deleting mine.
The only option I've ever used with the check boxes is "Sync only checked items".  I unchecked my videos so that they don't use up memory on my ipod but still show up in itunes.
