Man kills 5, self at Northern Illinois

By CARYN ROUSSEAU, Associated Press Writer 4 minutes ago

A man dressed in black opened fire with a shotgun and two handguns from the stage of a lecture hall at Northern Illinois University on Thursday, killing five people and injuring several others before committing suicide, authorities said.

University Police Chief Donald Grady confirmed the deaths following a news conference, according to local newspapers.

It was not clear whether the dead victims were among the 18 people school President John Peters had reported as wounded. He wouldn't confirm any fatalities other than the gunman.

Witnesses in the geology class said "someone dressed in black came out from behind a screen in front of the classroom and opened fire with a shotgun," Peters said.

The gunman shot himself on the stage after a brief rampage that sent terrified students screaming, crying and running for the doors around 3 p.m.

Lauren Carr said she was sitting in the third row of the lecture hall when she saw the shooter walk through a door on the right-hand side of the stage, pointing a gun straight ahead.

"I try to be a good student and sit close to the front and this is what happens," said Carr, a 20-year-old sophomore. "I personally Army-crawled halfway up the aisle ... I said I could get up and run or I could die here."

She said a student in front of her was bleeding, "but he just kept running."

"I heard this girl scream, 'Run, he's reloading the gun.'"

Grady said the gunman was not a student at the school. "It appears he may have been a student somewhere else," he said, adding that police had no apparent motive.

Seventeen victims were brought to Kishwaukee Community Hospital in DeKalb, according to spokeswoman Theresa Komitas. One died, two were admitted and three were discharged; five are being evaluated and six others were transferred to other hospitals in critical condition. At least one male died at OSF St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, an official said.

George Gaynor, a senior geography student, who was in Cole Hall when the shooting happened, told the student newspaper the Northern Star that the shooter was "a skinny white guy with a stocking cap on."

He described the scene immediately following the incident as terrifying and chaotic.

"Some girl got hit in the eye, a guy got hit in the leg," Gaynor said outside just minutes after the shooting occurred. "It was like five minutes before class ended too."

Witnesses said the young man carried a shotgun and a pistol. Student Edward Robinson told WLS that the gunman appeared to target students in one part of the lecture hall.

"It was almost like he knew who he wanted to shoot," Robinson said. "He knew who and where he wanted to be firing at."

Jillian Martinez, a freshman from Carpentersville, told the Chicago Tribune she was in the auditorium when the gunman entered through a door to the right of the lectern and opened fire about 3 p.m. "He just started shooting at all the kids," she said. "He just started shooting at people, and I ran out of there as fast as I could. I ran all the way to the student center; when I got there I could still hear shooting (from the classroom).

Agents with the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were assisting local authorities at the scene, spokesman Thomas Ahern told the Chicago Tribune.

"We will be urgently tracing the firearms and learning the history of the weapons," Ahern said.

All classes were canceled Thursday night and the 25,000-student campus was closed on Friday. Students were urged to call their parents "as soon as possible" and were offered counseling at any residence hall, according to the school Web site.

The school was closed for one day during final exam week in December after campus police found threats, including racial slurs and references to shootings earlier in the year at Virginia Tech, scrawled on a bathroom wall in a dormitory. Police determined after an investigation that there was no imminent threat and the campus was reopened.

The shooting was the fourth at a U.S. school within a week.

On Feb. 8, a woman shot two fellow students to death before committing suicide at Louisiana Technical College in Baton Rouge. In Memphis, Tenn., a 17-year-old is accused of shooting and critically wounding a fellow student Monday during a high school gym class, and the 15-year-old victim of a shooting at an Oxnard, Calif., junior high school has been declared brain dead.

I know, D.  It's so frustrating.  I chose to work in higher education because it used to feel like a safer place to be in the world.  That is no longer the case.

Part of the "why:"

The "Seville Statement" came out of a UNESCO group in the late 80s. It noted, among other findings, that nations that engaged in foreign wars had a greater tendency toward homicide and other violent crime. Sociologically speaking, there's a connection between crime on the home front and a war abroad. When nations try to solve problems through aggression and violence, it gives the citizenry a feeling of license.

Unfortunately we are probably going to hear in the next couple days that the shooter was on psychiatric drugs. Those black box warnings should not be taken lightly!! Every school shooter thus far has been on them. It's extremely sad.cry.gif

You were right.  He stopped taking his medication (haven't announced which one(s) yet).

I'm sorta concerned and confused by this post. Are you saying that all these meds are wrong to take? Or that there should be more oversight about who takes them? Or more oversight by the FDA?

I also don't find the classification of "every school shooter" being on meds very appropriate. It's an awful generalization without positive proof of going back through every school shooting ever.

I just really don't find the tone here, that meds are bad, very appropriate. Many people have been helped by whatever type of med they might be on and, I would argue, that people who carry out such acts of violence are deeply disturbed invidivuals. Not because of the meds they may or may not have been on, but because of thier mental and emotional problems.

This indivudual in question, had stopped taking his medication weeks ago, as is reported now. Also, to be entirely fair to this indivdual, it has not been reported which meds he was on (which he had stopped taking weeks before the shooting). I would withhold judgement on the meds until it has been reported which and why.

Sorry for the rant there, I just find it terribly distressting when people (a general statement!) start judging others with severe emotional and mental problems- even those who choose to confront thier illness with violence. Without knowing what it's like to be deeply depressed, suffer from schizophrenia, biopolar...etc, I can't even begin to imagine what it feels like to view a violent act as an answer to something or a resonable thing. Because he didn't leave a note of any sort (correct? I haven't seen any reported yet) so we may never know his motive.

Also, just as a ending point, it hasn't even been reported that the indivdual did have mental health issues, simply that he was on medication, had stopped taking it and was acting erratic. Sounds like mental health issues, but no statement yet about that.

You can't fix the crazies. You can do something about them getting their hands on ways to hurt the innocents though. When are people going to seriously start talking about gun control???

I didn't think BellinaJessica was judging people who take the drugs - I thought she was just offering up information and commenting that the whole situation is sad (which it is). I think it's terribly sad that someone who is mentally unhealthy feels the need to resort to this measures (if, in fact, he was mentally ill, which I is undetermined as of right now, as far as I've heard), and I am terribly sad that he didn't get the help he needed, and this is the unfortunate result.

BellinaJessica - feel free to tell me if I'm interpreting your post incorrectly smile.gif

No, I'm not judging people who take drugs or anyone with a mental illness. Just that the side effects of psychotropic drugs can be unbelievably frightening. Nevermind the combination of these drugs with other prescription drugs (witness, Heath Ledger.) If anything I am commenting on the American Psychiatric Association and the FDA for allowing drugs with such side effects to go on being prescribed the way they are.

Just do some research on the recent school shootings and you will find a good majority (if not all) of them were on such drugs with such KNOWN side effects. They don't have black box warnings for no reason.

It is unbelievably sad for all involved and I strongly think some more research needs to be done in to the area of these drugs.

Gunman's Friendly Exterior Masked Past

Steven Kazmierczak's quiet, dependable and fun-loving exterior masked troubling details from his past that emerged as a stunned community struggled to understand what caused the 27-year-old to open fire on a class at Northern Illinois University, leaving six people dead.

A former employee at a Chicago psychiatric treatment center said Kazmierczak was placed there after high school by his parents. She said he used to cut himself, and had resisted taking his medications.

He also had a short-lived stint as a prison guard that ended abruptly when he didn't show up for work. He was in the Army for about six months in 2001-02, but he told a friend he'd gotten a psychological discharge.

Exactly what set Kazmierczak off and why he picked his former university and that particular lecture hall remained a mystery.

On Thursday, Kazmierczak, armed with three handguns and a pump-action shotgun, stepped from behind a screen on the lecture hall's stage and opened fire on a geology class. He killed five students before committing suicide.

University Police Chief Donald Grady said Friday that Kazmierczak had become erratic in the past two weeks after he stopped taking his medication.

Kazmierczak spent more than a year at the Thresholds-Mary Hill House in the late 1990s, former house manager Louise Gbadamashi told The Associated Press. His parents placed him there after high school because he had become "unruly" at home, she said.

Gbadamashi said she couldn't remember any instances of him being violent.

"He never wanted to identify with being mentally ill," she said. "That was part of the problem."

The attack was baffling to many of those who knew him.

"Steve was the most gentle, quiet guy in the world. ... He had a passion for helping people," said Jim Thomas, an emeritus professor of sociology and criminology at Northern Illinois who taught Kazmierczak, promoted him to a teacher's aide and became his friend.

Kazmierczak once told Thomas about getting a discharge from the Army.

"It was no major deal, a kind of incompatibility discharge for a state of mind, not for any behavior," Thomas said. "He was concerned that that on his record might be a stigma."

Kazmierczak enlisted in September 2001, but was discharged in February 2002 for an "unspecified" reason, Army spokesman Paul Boyce said.

He worked from Sept. 24 to Oct. 9 as a corrections officer at the Rockville Correctional Facility, a medium-security prison in Rockville, Ind. His tenure there ended when "he just didn't show up one day," Indiana prisons spokesman Doug Garrison said.

Authorities were searching for a woman who police believe may have been Kazmierczak's girlfriend. According to a law enforcement official who spoke on condition of anonymity because the case is still under investigation, authorities were looking into whether Kazmierczak and the woman recently broke up.

On Feb. 9, Kazmierczak walked into a Champaign gun store and picked up two guns a Remington shotgun and a Glock 9mm handgun. He bought the two other handguns at the same shop a Hi-Point .380 on Dec. 30 and a Sig Sauer on Aug. 6.

All four guns were bought legally from a federally licensed firearms dealer, said Thomas Ahern, a spokesman for the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. At least one criminal background check was performed Kazmierczak had no criminal record.

Kazmierczak had a State Police-issued FOID, or firearms owners identification card, which is required in Illinois to own a gun, authorities said. Such cards are rarely issued to those with recent mental health problems.

NIU President John Peters said Kazmierczak compiled "a very good academic record, no record of trouble" at the 25,000-student campus in DeKalb. He won at least two awards and served as an officer in two student groups dedicated to promoting understanding of the criminal justice system.

Kazmierczak (pronounced kaz-MUR-chek) grew up in the Chicago suburb of Elk Grove Village. He was a B student at Elk Grove High School, where school district spokeswoman Venetia Miles said he was active in band and took Japanese before graduating in 1998. He was also in the chess club.

A statement posted on the door on the Urbana home of Kazmierczak's sister, Susan, said: "We are both shocked and saddened. In addition to the loss of innocent lives, Steven was a member of our family. We are grieving his loss as well as the loss of life resulting from his actions."

At NIU, six white crosses were placed on a snow-covered hill around the center of campus, which was closed Friday. They included the names of four victims Daniel Parmenter, Ryanne Mace, Julianna Gehant, Catalina Garcia. The two other crosses were blank, though officials have identified Kazmierczak's final victim as Gayle Dubowski.

By Friday night, dozens of candles flickered in packed snow at makeshift memorials around campus as hundreds of students, mostly wearing the school colors of red and black, packed a memorial service.

"It's kind of overwhelming. It feels strong, it feels like we're all in this together," said Carlee Siggeman, 18, a freshman from Genoa who attended the vigil with friends.

There's no need to be offended. It wasn't the point of the post, and it certainly wasn't a judgment or statement of intolerance.

I absolutely agree.  Information has been kept from the doctors who prescribe SSRI's.  I am a part of a few parenting forums, in which I have heard personal horror stories from mothers who were rashly prescribed meds for very mild PPD symptoms.  Even Fox News has done a recent report on these drugs and their dangers (Fox News...yes, seriously wink).

BellinaJessica is not blaming patients for wanting help.  She's right about the dangers.

I have never taken any sort of SSRI, as I am mostly anti-med, so I have no personal experience to share, thank God.  But the Britney Spears circus and Heath Ledger's sudden death got me interested and horrified by the issue of the dangers of SSRI's again.  Here's just one of many resources, I found out about this former drug rep just recently:  www.gwenolsen.com

Obviously, I am not claiming drugs are a factor in every violent act.  So Bluebirde has a good point too, sometimes crazy is just crazy.  Our brains are complex, we can't analyze everything.
