Old magazines: what to do with them?
Permalink Closed

I've been on a cleaning kick lately, and I have sooooo many magazines. What do you do with yours? Keep them for some amoutn of time and toss them? Keep them all? clip what you like and toss the rest? If you keep them (or parts of them) how do you keep them organized?

A coworker I was talking to told me that they keep the pages they like and then organize them in binders. I was thinking of doing that. Right now I keep them until I am tired of looking at them and then throw them out when I am on a cleaning kick.

I usually only keep the last couple months or so. I tear out anything I want to keep (which honestly isn't usually that much) and recycle the rest. I hand them off to my mom (who recycles them when she's done with them) and bring the ones she doesn't like to the recycle bin at the nearby grade school/church. They have huge yellow dumpsters and I think it helps fundraising or something somehow.

For years, I thought I'd save pages and organize them. It never happened. Now I recycle them after a couple of months. I have thought of bringing them to the gym once i"m done reading them though- I know there is always a shortage of good magazines there when i want to use the elliptical.

I usually rip out things I like and keep them in binders (a decor binder and a fashion/beauty one).  Lately, I have been ripping off the subscription stickers and bringing some issues to work.  I drop them off in the staff lounge for others to read.

Sometimes, when I'm in waiting rooms that have really bad magazines, I think about dropping off some of my recent issues when I'm finished reading--I never do it.  I would be like the Magazine Fairy.

You can also consider donating them to a thrift store.

I've had really good luck selling old magazines on Ebay, specifically back issues of Lucky. A few times I listed an entire year's worth of issues and the lots sold for at least $15 or $20. If it doesn't look like whatever I have is worth listing on Ebay I just recycle them. When I moved I threw out most of the folders where I saved clipped articles and I think from now on I'm going to try scanning anything I want to keep.

This is what I do. I have them organized by categories: beauty, fashion, cooking, home improvement, etc.

I have a CRAP load of old magazines, that I have gone thru, took out the pages I liked, I just need to get rid of them. I have them in a binder ALSO in manilla folders, until I have to really do a nice binder. I have articles on "clothes/fashion", "make-up", "exercise", etc. Since today was garbage day, I guess I'll chunk the ones in my bedroom that are collecting dust..... LOL

I stuff a lot of my old mags into my boots so that they stand upright in my closet

I clip what I like and put in a file folder.  Then I just toss the magazine.  Or you could donate them to a doctor's office.

Oh my god, I love that idea!  It bothers me so much when my boots flop over at the ankles.

I usually store my mags under the bed for a few while.  Every six months or so I spend an afternoon ripping out the pages I want to keep.  Really it is usually just one to three pages from each mag.  Right now the pages are just sitting in a file folder in my office, I should do something with them.
