Romney has dropped out! No more Hot Mormans for President!

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/07/us/politics/07cnd-repubs.html?hp

Do you suppose he will back McCain or Huckabee??

Also..on a related note: can anyone explain what will happen at the Demo Convention if there isn't a clear winner by majority (I know you need 1200 or so delegates, right??) for either Obama or HRC?

And what the frig is a super delegate? It sounds awesome! aww

ETA: What happens with his delegates???

'superdelegate' sounds a lot sexier than it is. they're just current and former elected office-holders and party officials who aren't bound by the results of presidential primaries/caucuses.

if you told me a month ago that ron paul would outlast giuliani and romney...

wow, i would have never expected this. he said he dropped out because this will make it more difficult for clinton or obama to win. now that is someone who really hates democrats.

Wait, no capes or tight underwear worn on the outside of the full-body suit? They're just fancy, special delegates who get to do what they want? Crap, I want my $9.99 back I spent on monograming that underwear.

this guy has strange motivations -- first the "house of reagan" comment, and then dropping out to ensure a democrat doesn't win seems odd to me.  as far as him dropping out to make sure a democrat doesn't win doesn't seem to make sense to me -- unless he's saying that he could not win against one of the current democratic candidates...

he dropped out for two reasons: a) he very likely won't win the nomination and doesn't want to keep spending his $; and b) he wants to run in 2012 or 2016, and he is trying to win the party's respect by "stepping aside" so that McCain can start to campaign against the dems. He comes out of this looking like a noble sacrificer rather than a loser.

relrel: I think if neither Hillary nor Obama has a substantial lead by the convention, there will be debates/conversations meant to aim the superdelegates. Or something.

Yes, I believe they're officially unpledged until the convention, even though some of them may have expressed support for one candidate or the other. And they can be wooed. Apparently Chelsea's been calling some of them up or taking them to lunch or something.

Also, if there's no clear nominee by convention time, there's been talk of giving Florida and, what's the other state? Michigan? Minnesota? back their delegates.

I don't generally discuss politics but I had to comment on this.  This really surprises me because he was in 2nd place.  I wonder where his primary votes will go.

Can't a candidate pass his delegates on to the person of his choice? Didn't Guiliani do that with McCain? I really can't remember, but I think that's what happens.

I agree that this helps Romney look like he "took one for the team," but whether or not people will remember him in 2012 or 2016 is a different story. He'll need to do something to keep himself relevant for the next four years in order for that to happen. (Joy.) I'm not quite sure what that would be though because he doesn't really seem to have any pet projects or really be passionate about...ummm...anything? John Edwards at least kept himself somewhat relevant and worked on a pet project of his with his poverty...thing. (I can't remember what it's called, but it's at UNC-CH.) But I'm not sure what Romney truly believes in or what he'd do to stay in the public eye for 4 or even 8 years.

Not sure about the republicans, but the democrats can pledge their delegates to whoever they want when they drop out. Its actually a big reason as to why some minor candidate stay in as long as they do... they hope that noone will have enough delegates and they'll have enough to be somewhat of an influence.

CNN said Romney will keep his delegates since he "suspended" his campaign rather than withdrawing.

I can't believe he said this:
"If I fight on in my campaign, all the way to the convention, I would forestall the launch of a national campaign and make it more likely that Senator Clinton or Obama would win. And in this time of war, I simply cannot let my campaign, be a part of aiding a surrender to terror," Romney told the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington.

this guy seriously has a warped way of thinking. I'm glad he "suspended" his campaign (and I'm glad he was open with his thoughts - this way everyone will know what a whack job he is)

I'm disappointed too. His father was governor of my state and he is from the town I live in.  I thought getting an accomplished business person in office might be beneficial to Michigan's economic state, but I think his whacky views way override any financial remedy he could offer.

I am thankful he dropped outeven though I didn't think he would win.  But I have been wrong before, as I didn't think Bush had a chance to win again in 2004 either.  Now I just hope that Romney doesn't end up being someone's running mate, in case my hunch that the republican candidate won't win proves wrong, he sucks!

If neither Clinton nor Obama have enough delegates to take the nomination (which at this point looks as though they won't)---They will try and woo the superdelegates and hash it out on the issues. I have the feeling that this may cause quite a rift in the party because people are so passionate about the candidates this year. I'm just excited that my state, Texas, finally matters in the primary!
