The fashion mistakes of your past
Permalink Closed

Inspired by Squishy's post which reminded me of some HIDEOUS shoes I once owned, let's reminisce about our horrible fashion faux pas.

Here's mine:

- In college, wearing "dirty" wash jeans w/ serious bleached whiskering that were ALSO torn and then laced all the way up the sides and didn't have butt pockets. It was like 25 trends in one pair of jeans.

- In high school, using glitter as my everyday accessory. I used to carry around this stick of perfume-smelling glitter and constantly smear it all over my face and body. Yuck!!

-  In jr high, when the whole jellies trend came in I had pink, sparkly, high-heeled strappy sandal jellies. I know you're jealous of that one!!

- In high school, wearking huge chunky doc. martin's with black mini skirts and band t-shirts and smearing as much black on my eyes as possible.

- First job, wearing a school-girl skirt to work w/ pig tails (I have NO IDEA what I was thinking).

- Wearing platform flip-flops almost all through college. The taller the better.

  1. My sophomore year of college, I didn't have any good places to shop. I bought a J. Lo. shirt online from Macys that was basically made of floral printed gauze with leather ties. The shirt had a very low V and tied up the front with the leather ties. It was very...um...special and sheer and too bohemian for its own good.
  2. I was a glitter fiend too in jr. high. I had this sparkly pink eyeshadow from Hot Topic that I used as blush and with lip gloss to make my lips sparkle.
  3. I did platform flip flops. I remember buying a pair of red suede Rocket Dog ones that had the bamboo weave bottoms but the giant-ass black platform in college. I was so proud of being able to tower over all my friends in them.
  4. When Juicy was first getting popular, I dressed it up and begged to wear it to cocktail functions. I wore the terry dresses with HEELS and I almost wore my terry set to a music industry party. Thankfully my BF stopped me on the second one.

Ha! I did this too. When it first came out, I wore a black velour Juicy smocked dress with jeans, heels and chandelier earrings to a nice restuarant.

I always wore school uniforms, so I think this prevented a lot of bad fashion choices. But for a wear what you want day in 9th grade, I wore a white tee with huge DKNY letters across the front. I look thought it was cool because it was "designer."

In college I had A LOT of stretchy skirts and tops from Express. And for some reason, it was the trend at my school to wear a sorority tee shirt, black stretchy skirt and flipflops, which of course I wore because it was convienent and comfy.

My absolute worst 100% fashion mistake was SPANDEX I wore so many spandex outfits in Jr high that my family nicknamed me Kelly Bundy. Except I wore mine with black Adidas and scrunchy socks instead of heels.

Oh and I recently found a picture of me at my 8th grade graduation party wearing short shorts and a t shirt that said Love Machine on it. Completely inappropriate seeiing as how I was only 14 years old.

I thought of something else -- wearing those little plastic brightly colored kids hair clips in my hair. I'd wear one on each side of my face. I had all different kinds and shapes, lol.

Oh my gosh, this is funny!

Jr. High:
It was the late 80's, so I blame it on that.

- black patent leather shoes with black-lace laces.
- Rolled up Jeans, with  2 or 3 different colors of scrunchy socks (hot pink, neon orange, neon green, etc) and reeboks.
-Baggy long sleeve or short sleeve blouses with vests!
-Jeans with leather on the front from the hips to the knees. Oh my  gosh! They were so kick ass at the time.
- Silk shirts that looked like patch work of different prints
- Hyper-colored shirts
- Hats like Blossom used to wear
- Baggy shirts that did nothing for my small frame.

High School:
(I thought I was so cool)
-Mary Janes with knee high socks
-Long skirts with mary janes
-any thing flannel and jeans with holes
-any thing grunge looking

subwolley and alliegurl we must have graduated around the same time(I was '93) because I too wore the same things you spoke of.

You can't forget though to get the tight pant roll you had to fold the leg over and then roll! That way they came out perfect!! LOL!

I also had black jeans with faux snakeskin/leather/I don't know what the heck I was thinking, on the front. I think I bought them at either the Merry Go Round or Contempo Casuals! LOL!

I wore tons of black concert tees from bands like Poison, Motley Crue and Bon Jovi. I wore so much black that my mom always told me she thought she was washing clothes for the hell's angels.

Anyone remember the sack-waist jeans by Palmetto in about 1988? Yep, I rocked them. With cropped tops.

Tight acid wash jeans with a giant oversized sweatshirt that had leather inserts around the shoulders. Good lord! At least I was only in about 4th grade....

I think I've shared some of this before but here I go again...it's bad too...

-There was this store called "Units" that carried all kinds of knitwear stuff.  They had these stretchy band-like belts that I wore as  mini skirts...so, so bad!
-Guess jeans with zippers at the ankles and of course they were acid washed!
-I used to wear my husband's oversized button-down Ralph Lauren polo shirts with khakis...and I don't know why!
-A melon colored fringe bikini from the store The Merry Go Round (1987)...
-The best one though was a white leather outfit I got from Wilson's Leather for Christmas (I think the Christmas of 1988).  It was very bright white, the jacket looked like a biker jacket and the skirt was very mini and slutty.  I teamed it with a fuschia pink Esprit bustier and some silver slingback flats from Payless.  Lovely!

I loved Units!  I think I was in 7th grade when I wore them.  I also loved big sweaters/sweatshirts with fluorscent puffy paint and rhinestones.  And you can never forget sweatshirts with "ESPRIT" "LIMITED" "FORENZA" or "LIMITED EXPRESS" on them!  They looked great with my tight rolled up jeans or stirrups with the layered scruncy socks.

Oh man...this could be a very long list! In my defense...it was the 80's...
1) high waisted, tapered jeans
2) black and white polka dot blouse, with shoulder pads
3) boxy jackets with shoulder pads
4) this black and white pair of shoes that basically the toe box was comedy/tragedy mask, worn ONLY with black stirrup pants and white socks, and a black and white sweater...while I had a poodle perm!!!! AUGH!
5)rockin the eighties prom look for middle school graduation...i looked like a puff ball!
6)tube socks scrunched down with heels and a catholic school girl skirt...topped with a white turtleneck and black baggy jacket

Ok, must stop before I lose all my style cred permanently!!! :)

Honestly, clothing trends/fads/phases don't count IMO. Sure, combat boots, shoulder pads, baggy clothes, overalls, etc. were unflattering and blah blah blah, but how could one NOT wear them? They were practically ubiquitous.

I think I'm glad we had so little money for clothes because I would have a much longer list than I do. I could never really afford the trends, but I was more counterculture anyway, and I still like heavy black eyeliner and Doc Martins if the occasion calls for it...however, you'll be relieved to hear that I no longer have the body to indulge my inner Flygirl.

In my early 20s if I had a zit, I would dot on some dark brown liquid eyeliner and set it with loose powder. Goodbye zit, hello flirty mole. It seemed brilliant at the time, but in retrospect it was probably stupid.

And I count it as a fashion mistake that I wore too little clothing at night, such as my Pocahontas Halloween costume circa 1993?94? Ultrasuede is surprisingly not that warm. Or maybe it was that the costume was basically a mini and a halter top and nude suede pumps.

I remember a few-

How about oversized puff paint sweatshirts & tshirts with skinny acid washed button bottom jeans?

My high school look was a concert tshirt, flannel shirt over the t, denim jacket over that, Jordache jeans, and either tennis shoes or knee high boots with the jeans tucked in

I remember Units and the wonderful little plastic thing that you wound through the bottom to tie the shirt up

Probably the worst was a baby pink spandex ankle length leotard, a black Units top with the plastic thingy at the bottom, pumps, and frosted hair

I definitely remember the jeans roll up and 3 pair of colored socks.

Ha, don't you just love the 80's?...

Oh gosh!   I just remembered bolero jackets.  I had a skirt/jacket set in 1987 that was baby pink taffeta-type material with black polkadots - - bolero jacket and HUGE bubble skirt.  It went perfect with my triangular-shaped, frizzy bob hairdo.  Go Martika!

Collette - that "Love Machine" thing is absolutely hilarious!

One of my roommates used to make little tank tops that she dyed all kinds of colours and batiked a design on top. Another roommate hit on the idea of wearing them braless because it was hot out and summer and we all agreed that it ruined the line to stick a bra underneath them. I don't know what we were doing. My paddling team was going out for a summer hike and I put on my green batiked shirt sans bra and put on a pair of denim shorts and headed out. I met up with one of the older women from my team and she gave me a really dubious, hostile look. We wound up at the wrong trailhead and and had to go to another spot, and one of the guys from my team happened by and offered me a ride. It turned out that we had missed the hike completely and the guy was all creepy and tried to put the moves on me, so I told him that I would get myself home and acted like I had something to do in the middle of nowhere. Well, I reach home and look in the mirror and you could SEE EVERYTHING. The shirt was clinging to me like transparent saran wrap! It was lewder than lewd. I was so embarassed!! Meanwhile my friend that made the shirts had come home and apparently she had been at a soccer barbecue wearing her shirt braless and her ex was there and he sort of hounded her into the bush and told her that she needed to put some clothes on! And our third roommate? She got up in a hurry in the mornings and wore her shirt braless two or three days after that- none of us crossed paths that week- and some guy approached her when she was out downtown, handed her a card and asked her to model for his porn site. To this day I can't believe that three completely sane women all made the same honest mistake with the same clothes. I even have a picture of us wearing them together but mercifully everything didn't show up on camera.
It seems that the shirts that we were wearing looked opaque at night but were indecent in the broad light of day. I can never look back to that revealing week without cringing. I'm sure it hurt my reputation at the time.
