PC to Mac?
Permalink Closed

Has anyone made the switch from a PC to a Mac?

I've had great luck with PC desktops, but I'm having terrible luck with my pc laptops. I bought one about two years ago when I went overseas (a Sony Vaio) and I had so many problems with it. I couldn't bring it to law school because, no joke, it takes about 5 minutes to start up! It's super slow, and it was like that from day one, though it wasn't quite as slow as it is today. Now I am using my brother's old Acer, which is also two years old and it works okay, I guess, but it's also a bit slower than I'd like, plus it's just massive, and for the second time, there is something wrong with the screen. That happened to my Vaio too (I always get strips of black on the screen - maybe I'm too hard on them? I use a padded laptop backpack).

I'm seriously considering getting a Macbook for either next semester or for the fall semester. I love the way Macs look and I've only ever heard fabulous things about them. By next fall, the computer I have will be three years old, and I read somewhere that's how often you need to replace your computer. confused

However, the only time I've ever really used Macs was in two of my journalism classes un undergrad, and I was always frustrated when I used them, but I think that was because we didn't spend a lot of time on them, so I could never remember how to find/do anything.

Has anyone made the switch from a PC to a Mac? Is it doable? Someone told me you either hate Macs or love them. Is this true? Are they faster than PCs?

Thanks!

I made the switch abut 2 years ago, and I'd never go back. It probabaly took me about a week to get used to it, but after that I had no problems. I use a PC at work and a mac at home and that doesn't get confusing either.

I'm not really sure about speeds (I pretty much keep mine on all the time), but it runs just as well today as the day i got it, and it gets a LOT of use.

sony vaio laptops are TERRIBLE, TERRIBLE clunky POS-es. i've killed several, and it seems as though they severely compromise their quality by focusing too much on the exterior/design/packaging. i've been suckered in by their pretty, purple metallic chassis, but never again!

not all PCs are horrible! :)

that said, i use PCs at home (windows xp; don't have the cojones/patience for vista), but use macs at work. it's hard to compare the processing speeds between PCs and macs, since they used to run on different processors, but the iMacG5 i use at work isn't considerably faster than my dell desktop. booting time largely depends on the software, as well as the hardware.

i'd seriously consider macs if i didn't have to rely so much on open source/non-mac-compatible software.

My husband is a designer, so we have Mac at home. It does take a different way of thinking (more dragging, less clicking), but I like Mac platform just as much. There are still some internet applications and software that cannot be run on Macs, but they're not important. I just bought a Dell laptop so I can roam around the house with my internet instead of being cooped up in the office. I specifically got XP. We'll see.

I've used PC's my whole life.  Two of the computers at work are Macs (mine is a PC though), so I use them sometimes.  And then I got a macbook, which I exclusively use at home now.   So I guess I've made the switch and honestly, I don't think it's all that hard of one to make.  I don't even see how you can hate one or the other.  To me, ease of use is the same, but I like how macs are designed better.

Thanks everyone! I'm pretty sure I'm going to go for a Macbook, since it sounds like you all love yours! Plus, I get a 10% discount because I am a student. I think I will wait until this summer though, when I will get a summer job.

Squishy, I wish I had known what POS's Vaio's are. When  bought my Vaio, I was deciding between that and an HP, which was similarily priced, and I went for the Vaio because it looked nicer. ashamed They suck you in with the pretty packaging; it's too bad they make a terrible product though!

Get a Mac!! I love Mac's. I'm getting one in a few months when I start grad school. Right now I have a Dell laptop and it will be two years old in the spring. I've had so many annoying PC issues with it. I can't wait to get my Mac.

As far as your speed, that depends on a few things- ram, processing speed, how much software you have on your computer and how many files you have saved on the computer. For my purposes, when I order my Mac, I'm upgrading to 4 gig of ram and I'm getting the fastest processor possible.

Thanks kenzie! I've definitely decided on getting a Macbook. Now I just have to wait until this summer. *sigh*
