so, i've read a few stories that there is finally going to be a sex and the city movie.  a few years ago i'd have been excited about this, but now i feel the ship has sailed.  i can't imagine what they'd do to make this a truly interesting story.  if it's something like carrie is engaged to big, they break up, and then get back together before the wedding it will be so lame.  what do you think?

here's a story:

"Sex and the City" headed to movie theaters

The four women who spiced up Manhattan's singles scene for six years on the HBO television series "Sex and the City" appear headed for a big-screen reunion after all.

New Line Cinema, a corporate sibling of HBO under Time Warner Inc., is close to sealing a final deal to finance and distribute the long-stalled picture, a spokesman for the studio said on Thursday.

The project is set to begin shooting in the fall with all four stars of the HBO hit -- Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon -- on board to reprise their roles.

Longtime series executive producer Michael Patrick King will direct the film from his own script and serve as producer, along with Parker and series creator Darren Star.

While no release date has been set, the movie presumably would arrive in theaters sometime next year.

Plans for a movie were first revealed by HBO in early 2004, months before the show ended its six-season run.

But the project stalled, according to show business newspaper Daily Variety, when Cattrall sought greater script control and a salary closer to that of Parker, who was more highly paid than her co-stars because she was a co-executive producer of the series.

Variety said Cattrall ultimately was won over with a sweetened offer that included a series deal with HBO.

The New Line spokesman said it was not immediately clear whether any supporting cast members, such as Chris Noth, would join the film.

"Sex and the City," based on the work of best-selling author Candace Bushnell, was the first cable series to win an Emmy for best comedy and starred Parker as a fashion-conscious New York columnist who writes about Manhattan's dating scene.

The series co-starred Cattrall as the vixen-like public relations executive Samantha Jones; Nixon as hard-boiled lawyer Miranda Hobbes, juggling career with motherhood; and Davis as inveterate optimist Charlotte York, who married her own divorce lawyer after a long search for Mr. Right.

While many television series over the years have been based on movies or made into feature films, it is rare for prime-time shows to make the transition to the big screen with most of their original cast members.

I'm over it at this point. It would have been cool right after the series ended, but I think you're totally right scarlett, that this ship has sailed. It was such a great show at the time because it was totally groundbreaking, but I feel like times have changed now. I also feel like they did a pretty good job of wrapping up the series at the finale, so there's nothing left that we need to know. I just kinda see it as one of the "Saved By The Bell" reunion shows which were just to get the old cast back together for a few silly shenanigans and nothing more.

I'm also over it. I was *reallly* happy with the way the show ended, I don't need anything else. Who knows tho? I'm sure I'll see it when it's released on DVD.

Am I excited about it? No. Will I go see it? Abso-f'in-lutely! I don't know what they could possibly to with the storylines, so I'm prepared to be disappointed, but I will see it, nonetheless.

It's sad to me that such a great series will be such a flop in the theaters.

Is anyone else picturing a bunch of older ladies that think they are being hip, going to see this movie? I am totally scared of the vision that is in my head right now.

I think they definitely missed the window with this one...it's been years!
Though, maybe, they are trying to appeal to the 17-21 set?

ditto! I don't think it will be a masterpiece, but I'm too curious not to see it.

I will always be a fan, and I am super excited! I think Michael Patrick King will do an excellent script. I don't think it the movie will flop either, it is a decent alternative to the few "chick flick" options out there. But either way I won't be disappointed. Yaaay!

I think that it will be well done, considering how well the show was always written. I loved that show and will go see the movie to see what happens.

I just wanted to add to what I wrote earlier. I have no doubt that the film will be beautifully written and directed. However, I absolutely love how the show ended, and I can't imagine how they could develop the storylines in a way that wouldn't ruin or change it all. I am curious to find out what happens, but not excited. I'm fully expecting to be disappointed, but only because I was fully satisfied with the way it ended. Now, if they made the movie when there was still buzz, it might be a different story...

This is exactly how I feel. It was a fantastic show and really made me think about my life and what I wanted from life in a meaningful way, which I think is a rare thing. And I absolutely loved how it ended too -- I've seen the finale probably 4 or 5 times now and it made me cry the first few times.

But, I am just curious to see what happens, not super excited, and whenever it comes out I'll most likely wait for the DVD. It's a shame this didn't happen a few years ago. I just don't want to see manufactured drama or obstacles for the characters just to have them end up the same way as they did already.

I guess I'm just curious what the next part of the story is.  And the clothing :).  That said, I really liked how the show ended and I'm a little worried that it will be hard to top!

I know they won't do this, but because these women aren't in their early 30's anymore and will no longer seem like hot stuff strutting into a nightclub and ordering a cosmo...

maybe they will put in the backdrop some new characters who are in their ealy 30's and single, who happen to read Carrie's column and go through the same stuff she did...?  Or maybe it will be just more funny stuff about relationships, observations, fashion, etc.  I could also see the writers playing up the "cougar" trend that's so talked about in pop culture now.

I hope for the best, it was such a cool show, I hate that they (and we women eventually all) have to be called too old and unhip.

They (and we!) don't! It's only Hollywood and our youth culture that propogates this. Don't buy into it. I'd love to see more movies made where women in their late thirties and over forty have great roles.

I am on the fence about the movie...will probably wait for the DVD. I enjoyed the show a lot, though DH and I often found the Carrie (and sometimes Charlotte) character to be overly neurotic and obsessive. I love SJP though.

I'm excited to see it. It's still my favorite show, I've watched the entire series 2 or 3 times this year alone.

Not sure what exactly will happen in the movie, but I'm going to see it.
